On 16 October, we officially opened the doors to the GAME Street Sports Hub - Nairobi !!!

For us at Kibera, this is another step towards building a community where young people are not just beneficiaries of change, but active creators of it.

The doors are open. The courts/fields are ready. The possibilities are endless, and the real journey begins with every young person who walks in.

Through music, spoken word and storytelling, these 10 emerging female artists from Nairobi’s informal settlements are using their voices to share their experiences, express their hopes and inspire change.

At Amani Kibera, we believe that building peaceful and inclusive communities begins with creating spaces where women and young people are heard, valued and given opportunities to shape their futures.

Join us in celebrating their voices at TUSIKIZE!!! – The Final Concert on 10th October at Mageuzi Hub, Metropolitan Court. Doors open at 4 PM.

At an exhibition in , Germany, our co-founder and director, Ben Ooko, shared a vision of what the future Amani Kibera Resource Center could look like.

It was a simple drawing, but behind it was a big hope: to create a place where children and young people could learn, read, explore and simply have a space that belonged to them.

Sixteen years later, we came across that picture again.

And now, beside it, is the Amani Kibera BookHouse.

It doesn't look like the building in the original sketch. The shape changed. The plans changed. The journey certainly changed.

But what matters most stayed.

The purpose.

A place for children and young people. A place for books, learning and imagination. A place rooted in Kibera and open to the community.

Looking at the two images side by side reminds us that meaningful work rarely follows a straight line. What begins as an idea can take years, unexpected turns and many helping hands before it becomes something people can actually walk into and use.

Years ago, it was an idea on paper.

Today, children open its doors, pick up books, read, play, learn and imagine what might be possible for them.

Different shape. Same purpose. Same community.

Perhaps that is the real lesson in this picture is hold onto what matters, keep doing the work, and give good ideas the time and care they need to grow.

We are grateful for how far this journey has come and even more grateful that the journey continues.

The BookHouse had the great pleasure of hosting Wangari -The Storyteller as our second guest in our with and Authors series.

And honestly, calling her a “storyteller” almost feels like an understatement.

doesn't simply stand in front of children and tell them what happened in a story. She becomes the story.There is acting, movement, humour, voices, music, rhythm, and before you know it, the children are no longer sitting in a library. They are somewhere inside the story, living it.

And she doesn't come alone!!! She arrived with , an exceptionally talented instrumentalist whose drum seemed to have a language of its own. Together, they turned the into something between a library, a theatre and a very happy playground.

Wangari is also a children's author, with 20 children's books to her name, and her storytelling has taken her to audiences far beyond Kenya. Her work is a beautiful reminder that reading is not only about sitting quietly with a book. Sometimes, a story needs to jump off the page, dance around a little, make you laugh, and then quietly find a home in your imagination.

For us at Amani Kibera BookHouse, this is exactly why we started Community Conversations with Writers and Authors

We want our children to meet the people behind the books. To hear their stories. To ask questions. To discover that writers and storytellers are real people, and perhaps, one day, to imagine themselves becoming one too.

One author. One storyteller. One conversation at a time, we are nurturing a culture of reading, imagination and curiosity in Kibera.

Thank you, Wangari, for bringing the stories to life. Thank you, Mike, for giving them a heartbeat.
