The Amani Kibera BookHouse was never meant to be a project built for the community. It was always meant to be built with the community.
Long before the first stone was laid, community members spent nearly two years dreaming together about what this space could become. Children shared their ideas. Young people imagined new possibilities. Women, men, elders, persons with disabilities, local leaders, duty bearers, and other stakeholders all came to the table. They listened to one another, challenged one another, and slowly shaped a vision that belonged to everyone.
We co-created this together.
And when it was finally time to build, the community did not step aside. Residents who had helped shape the vision rolled up their sleeves and helped bring it to life. Skilled workers from the community were given first priority, with rotational unskilled labourers were also given priority to contribute their time and labour as well . The hands that imagined the BookHouse became the hands that built it.
Community ownership and meaningful engagement
It is the pride of pointing to a wall and knowing you helped raise it. It is seeing your ideas reflected in a space that will serve generations to come. It is walking through the doors and feeling that you belong there because you helped create it.
Today, the Amani Kibera BookHouse is a building that carries the fingerprints, ideas, hopes, and aspirations of the people who call this place home.
Its foundation is made of shared dreams, collective effort, and a deep sense of ownership that no one can take away.
