Girls Power! 💪 The Youth Advisory Panel

Her Future, Her Right means girls having the power to choose, the freedom to stay in shool, dream boldly and shape their own lives.

Across communities, girls are raising their voices, challenging harmful norms and leading efforts to end child marriage.

When girls are heard, protected and supported, their future becomes a right not a privilege.

More often than not, there is an assumption that simply by virtue of being a girl or woman, one can confidently lead sexual and reproductive health conversations.

Led by Valerie Koloju, this session with members of the Youth Advisory Panel, Girls Not Brides Kenya was intentionally designed to challenge that assumption by strengthening facilitation skills, building confidence and providing practical tools for engaging in sexual and reproductive health and rights dialogue.

The focus was on preparing young women to lead safe, informed and inclusive conversations at the grassroots level, where such discussions are often most needed.

By equipping young women to hold space, navigate sensitive topics and foster trust within their communities, the initiative reinforces youth-led approaches to education and advocacy, and contributes to more responsive, community-driven outcomes.

Prof. Samuel Kimani emphasized the critical role of data in youth advocacy, particularly in addressing challenges such as child marriage, FGM and teenage pregnancy in Kenya.

Data strengthens credibility, makes hidden problems visible and provides a compelling basis for influencing decision-makers. Most importantly, it allows NGOs and youth-led initiatives to design evidence-based solutions that respond to real needs.

Effective advocacy draws from multiple sources, including statistics and numbers, surveys and polls, research studies and lived experiences translating stories into credible evidence that drives change.

Turning data into impactful advocacy messages involves identifying key trends, simplifying findings for clarity, using visuals like charts and infographics, and connecting the evidence to real-life impacts that resonate with communities.

Data also plays a powerful role in influencing policy. By translating insights into policy briefs, presenting findings to leaders, engaging the media and leveraging social media campaigns, young people can shape decisions that affect their lives.

However, young people face challenges, including limited access to data, gaps in technical skills and concerns about data credibility. These can be overcome by partnering with researchers, learning basic data skills, using open data platforms and building coalitions that strengthen reach and impact.

In conclusion, data empowers young people to advocate effectively, influence policies and drive meaningful social change.

Young people are not just beneficiaries of change they are powerful drivers of it.

Today Girls Not Brides Kenya Youth Advisory Panel with support from Orchid Project we are centering youth voices, leadership and innovation to strengthen collective action towards ending child marriage.
