1️⃣ PadhAI: Designed to strengthen foundational literacy and enable meaningful formative assessment in multilingual, low-resource classrooms.

2️⃣ Anytime Testing Machine (ATM): Designed to support learning pathways by generating curriculum-aligned tests and personalised feedback—anytime, anywhere, and for anyone.

📍 From over 270 global applications across 14 countries, only 37 were chosen. We are honored to be among those selected, showcasing how AI can be deployed at scale to ensure no learner is left behind.

Between 15th and 17th January 2026, senior managers from the Lao PDR Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) visited schools in Kampong Cham province, Cambodia, to gain insights from the ASEAN-UK SAGE Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) project that has been running there since March 2025.

The MoES delegation learnt how TaRL has been helping Grade 4 and 5 students, who are at risk of dropping out, to develop the basic literacy and numeracy skills they need to catch up and stay in school. By going to the field, the delegation was able to see the teachers and students in action and also meet the TaRL mentors and district and provincial education authorities. This helps them to better understand the governance and support structures that underpin a successful TaRL intervention, as well as how it is implemented in the classroom.

A similar project is being developed in Lao PDR for out-of-school children in Savannakhet Province, delivered by Pratham International, supported by ASEAN-UK SAGE.

So far, the TaRL project in Cambodia has shown extremely positive results, with the number of students reading at paragraph level and up increasing from 40% in the baseline assessment to 65% in the midline assessment. The results are even more impressive with mathematics, with the number of students at the subtraction level and up increasing from approximately 43% in the baseline assessment to 93% in the midline assessment.

The TaRL project in Cambodia is being delivered by Pratham International, along with ASEAN-UK SAGE partners, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), and SEAMEO TED.

The ASEAN-UK SAGE programme is delivered by British Council and SEAMEO Secretariat, in partnership with EdTech Hub and Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), and is an ASEAN cooperation programme funded by UK International Development.

We strengthened our teams supporting Latin America and Southeast Asia, welcoming two new locally based colleagues in these regions.

We piloted NexTayari in Kenya, a one-of-a-kind youth-to-work digital platform connecting young people to jobs, learning resources, and industry networks. 500+ Kenyan youth also secured formal-sector internships.

LiteracyLeap, our AI-powered, offline, and accent-inclusive assessment tool, was selected as a Tools Competition 2025 winner, and this year we began building a localized voice dataset in Colombia with Fundación Aprender a Quererte

Pratham International congratulates the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard on being selected as the 2025 MacArthur Foundation award recipient for their Sentinel project.

Earlier this year, Pratham was honored to be named one of five finalists out of nearly 900 global applicants for our evidence-based Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach. Reaching the finalist stage affirmed the global relevance and urgency of foundational learning and strengthened our shared commitment to expanding TaRL with partners across India, Africa, and Latin America.

We are grateful to MacArthur Foundation and LeverforChange for recognizing the importance of helping every child build essential reading and math skills. This journey has sharpened our vision and energized our long-term work with governments and communities to ensure more children are not just in school but learning well.

Chosen from 789 innovations and based on nearly 3,360 expert reviews, TaRL stood out as one of the top 100 innovations to watch out for in 2026, based on its proven ability to help children who struggle with the basics of reading and math catch up quickly.

Pioneered by Pratham Education Foundation in India, the TaRL approach helps children learn faster by meeting them where they are. Instead of teaching based on age or grade, TaRL focuses on each child’s current learning level to help them build critical foundational skills.

As Rukmini Banerji, CEO of Pratham Education Foundation, shares: “TaRL feels magical when it comes alive in classrooms worldwide. In a matter of days and weeks, children are transformed.”
