LWF Kenya Somalia Program

LWF Kenya Somalia Program The LWF Kenya Somalia program was founded in 1992 with the establishment of Kakuma refugee camp.

LWF/WS is a faith-based humanitarian International NGO operating programmes in emergency relief, rehabilitation and development in 32 countries across the world LWF's presence in Kenya dates back to 1973, when providing logistical support for relief activities in Southern Sudan. Today LWF Kenya Somalia works in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, as well as Kismayu Somalia. The Kenya progra

mme runs three projects: Assistance to refugees in Kakuma and Dadaab as well as to the Turkana and Garissa host communities. In Kakuma, LWF is the lead agency for education, running schools for 100,000 refugee students from 23 countries. LWF also provides youth activities such as Kakuma premier league and Kakuma Got Talent, as well as livelihood activities. According to UNHCR statistics, the Dadaab complex has a population of 232,992 registered refugees and asylum seekers (96.2% of whom are of Muslim faith from neighboring Somalia) and consists of three camps namely Dagahaley, Ifo, and Hagadera. LWF has been working in Dadaab since 2008 and currently implements two sectors namely, education and community services. LWF Kenya Somalia seeks to address causes and consequences of human suffering and poverty among vulnerable populations in Kenya and Somalia through active partnership with local communities and organizations. The focus is primarily on refugee assistance in emergency relief situations and expanding to include more long-term development projects.

Every child deserves a seat in the classroom; a desk to sit at, a book to open, a teacher ready to guide them.

Through our partnership with EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, LWF is making that possible for displaced children and youth in Kenya's refugee camps. From textbooks and uniforms to assistive devices for learners with disabilities, this partnership is removing the barriers that keep children out of school.

Kachiri Khalid from Kakuma and Ikran Ibrahim from Dadaab are among the learners whose stories remind us why this work matters.
Together, we are building access to quality, safe, and inclusive education, because no child's future should be determined by where they were born.

In Bulagudud, on the outskirts of Kismayo, Somalia, farming has long been constrained by erratic rainfall, rising fuel costs, and limited access to agricultural inputs and knowledge. For many smallholder farmers, this meant repeated crop failure and persistent vulnerability.

Through the installation of a 28-kW solar-powered irrigation system, combined with climate-smart agriculture training, farm tools, and access to quality seeds, this dynamic is changing. Farmers are now able to irrigate consistently, diversify crop production, and reduce operational costs.

To date, 12 farming cooperatives comprising 1,440 farmers have transitioned to solar irrigation, enabling year-round cultivation and improved resilience to climate shocks.

We were privileged today to join fellow humanitarian organizations and partners at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where key milestones for Kenya’s Public Benefit Organizations sector were marked, including the launch of the PBO Regulations and the Annual Sector Report 2024/2025.

During the event, our Country Representative welcomed Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya to the LWF exhibition booth, highlighting our work with refugees, host communities and IDPs in Kenya and Somalia respectively.

We invite you to visit our booth and engage with our team as the exhibition continues through 18th April. Discover how we are working with communities and partners to drive sustainable impact.

An invitation to embrace transformed lives

In our Easter message, LWF Council member, Nepalese pastor Rev. Rinki Soren encourages Christians to leave their old selves behind and embrace transformed lives. Christ’s resurrection is a reminder that “God is still at work,” inviting us to choose justice over injustice and love over division in a world marked by violence, inequality, and broken relationships.
