# # They May Not Say It — But They’re Feeling It

Children often lack the words to express feelings like “I’m anxious” or “I feel alone.” However, their actions can convey these emotions more powerfully through silence, withdrawal, tantrums, or even laughter that seems forced.

It’s essential to acknowledge that children experience emotional highs and lows just like adults, and they deserve support in the same way. This is the purpose of Childline Kenya’s 116 helpline: to provide a safe space for children to talk, cry, ask questions for things they do not understand, or simply be heard.

Let’s raise a generation that’s emotionally strong because they were emotionally supported

It is the International day of Child helplines
Today we celebrate the lifeline that never sleeps the 116 Child Helpline.
For thousands of children across Kenya, it’s more than a number. It’s a friend, a safe space, a path to healing. As we mark International Day of Child Helplines, we honor every voice that reached out and every ear that listened. Child Helpline International

Today, on the International Day of Child Helplines, we pause to celebrate a simple yet powerful truth: a single phone call can change a child’s life.

Since its inception, Childline Kenya — through the national helpline 116 — has stood as a pillar of protection, support, and hope for children across the country. Whether it’s a child escaping abuse, seeking emotional support, or just needing someone to talk to, 116 has answered the call, literally more than a million times.

These calls represent more than just voices on the line. They are cries for help, moments of courage, and first steps toward healing. And thanks to the dedication of trained counselors, social workers, and child protection partners, these voices are not just heard — they are uplifted and empowered.

As we celebrate this day, let us recommit to ensuring that every child knows they are never alone. Let’s continue to promote 116 and strengthen the systems that allow children to speak up and be safe.

Because every child deserves to be heard and believed. #116

“Only Children from troubled homes have mental health problems.”
That’s a harmful myth.

The truth? Mental health challenges don’t discriminate.
Children from loving, stable, and even financially secure homes can still struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress.

A happy home doesn’t make a child immune to bullying, grief, academic pressure, or emotional overwhelm. When we assume a child has to come from a "bad home" to need help, we silence others who are suffering quietly.

At Childline Kenya, we believe every child deserves mental health support without judgment or labels.
Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or teacher—be open, be aware, and be ready to listen.

"What really happens at Child Helpline Kenya night shifts? From urgent calls to team consultations, hear it straight from a former counselor! Moses Waweru" |

"When the world slept, we stayed awake. The night shifts at the Child Helpline Kenya Call Centre are not just about answering calls; it’s about being a lifeline for children in distress. Some nights are quiet, but others are filled with whispered fears, urgent pleas, and the heavy responsibility of being the first person to hear a child’s cry for help.
"I don’t feel safe."
"I have nowhere to go."
"Please don’t hang up.
"Please come rescue us its urgent”…
Our shifts began from 4.00PM to 7.00AM twice a week. In those long hours, we did not work alone. When in doubt, we always turned to our fellow counselors because none of us had all the answers. Together, we dissected cases, shared insights, and ensured that every child got the right immediate support. Most importantly, we provided debriefing services for each other whenever needed. The weight of the work is lighter when carried as a team.
We heard it all: scared children locked inside a room because their parent was drunk and violent, the teenager ready to give up, the runaway child with nowhere to go, a distressed parent with a truant child, Each call is a life, and each life mattered to me, to us. Some stories stay with you forever. But in the end, knowing that we were there, night after night, to listen, to comfort, and to act that’s what kept us going." Congratulations Childline Kenya as you celebrate 20 years of great work. I am part of your history…and I am proud of the positive change I made to children’s lives. Martha Sunda

“Twenty years of child protection is not just a milestone; it is a movement one that has restored hope, rescued dreams, and rewritten countless stories of resilience. As we reflect on this journey, we are grateful for the partnerships, the dedication of our staff, and the communities that have stood with us. We celebrate the lives changed, the battles won, and the bright futures secured. But our work is far from over. Let this be a reminder that protecting children is not a choice, it is a duty, a promise, and a lifelong mission."

🌟 Therapy Closer to the Child: Bringing Mental Health and Psychosocial Assistance to the Heart of Nairobi! 🌟

Last week, Childline Kenya hit the road to provide free counseling and therapeutic support to children across Nairobi! Our mission was simple: to ensure that every child, no matter their circumstances, has access to mental health and emotional well-being services. 💖✨

With a dedicated team of counselors, we reached children in Kibra, Njiru, Westlands, Dagoretti, and Starehe using play, art, and other child-centered approaches. Our focus was on:
1. Emotional Development
2. Behavioral Support
3. Family Therapy
Through these sessions, we provided empathetic and confidential support, creating safe spaces where children and families could heal and thrive.

Why does this matter? Psychosocial support helps children:
🌟 Develop resilience in the face of trauma and life’s challenges
🌟 Build emotional regulation skills for navigating home, school, and social environments

We are inspired by the courage of every child we met that week and remain committed to ensuring hashtag . 💕
Let’s keep supporting our children to grow into confident, emotionally strong, and resilient individuals! 🙌✨
