"What really happens at Child Helpline Kenya night shifts? From urgent calls to team consultations, hear it straight from a former counselor! Moses Waweru" |
"When the world slept, we stayed awake. The night shifts at the Child Helpline Kenya Call Centre are not just about answering calls; it’s about being a lifeline for children in distress. Some nights are quiet, but others are filled with whispered fears, urgent pleas, and the heavy responsibility of being the first person to hear a child’s cry for help.
"I don’t feel safe."
"I have nowhere to go."
"Please don’t hang up.
"Please come rescue us its urgent”…
Our shifts began from 4.00PM to 7.00AM twice a week. In those long hours, we did not work alone. When in doubt, we always turned to our fellow counselors because none of us had all the answers. Together, we dissected cases, shared insights, and ensured that every child got the right immediate support. Most importantly, we provided debriefing services for each other whenever needed. The weight of the work is lighter when carried as a team.
We heard it all: scared children locked inside a room because their parent was drunk and violent, the teenager ready to give up, the runaway child with nowhere to go, a distressed parent with a truant child, Each call is a life, and each life mattered to me, to us. Some stories stay with you forever. But in the end, knowing that we were there, night after night, to listen, to comfort, and to act that’s what kept us going." Congratulations Childline Kenya as you celebrate 20 years of great work. I am part of your history…and I am proud of the positive change I made to children’s lives. Martha Sunda
