DEEPENING YOUTH LEADERSHIP THROUGH DIASPORA PARTNERSHIPS
Today, the leadership of The Youth Parliament of Kenya (YPK) held a fruitful engagement with Hon. Ephraim Mwaura , President & Executive Director of the Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA). The meeting focused on how Kenyan youth at home and in the diaspora can jointly strengthen governance, leadership, and meaningful participation in national development.
โ
In our conversation, we reflected on the realities facing young people in Kenya, including weakened youth institutions, political interference, and growing frustration among youth who feel excluded from decisionโmaking spaces. We also discussed the risk of diaspora youth becoming disconnected from Kenyaโs governance processes and development agenda, even while maintaining a strong sense of Kenyan identity.
โ
YPK affirmed its commitment to structured engagement between Kenyan and diaspora youth through programs that build capacity, confidence, and character. Together with KCA, we explored opportunities around advocacy training, mentorship, and leadership development that can equip young people to understand governance, champion community priorities, and lead with integrity.
โ
A key area of convergence is the power of peer networking, mentorship and influence. As YPK, we believe that youth leadership grows stronger when young people learn from one another, model integrity, and embrace service before status. We are encouraged by KCAโs openness to coโcreating frameworks that connect youth in Kenya and the diaspora through shared learning and joint initiatives.
โ
This engagement marks the beginning of a promising partnership between YPK and KCA, grounded in service, collaboration, and a shared commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders. We look forward to announcing concrete programs and opportunities for youth participation in the coming days.
