The National Gay and Le***an Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) is a charitable trust that seeks to complement the efforts of existing LGBTIQ organizations by; a) engaging in incremental litigation and documentation to build a body of evidence for decriminalization; b) offering expertise technical support in the struggle for legal reform, specifically in the interpretation and implementation of the

Constitution; and c) building a vibrant q***r culture that affirms the freedoms of expression and association as well as civil political participation in society. Founded by six young legal advocates, NGLHRC announced its foundation at its inaugural Gay and Le***an Awards in December 2012. Held in Nairobi's City Hall, the Awards affirmed the Kenyan-ness of the LGBTIQ community while demanding for their inclusion in public and social organizing spaces. Since then, NGLHRC has been encouraging diversity and agitating for public dialogue on s*x, s*xuality, gender and non-conformity.

Happy Friday Friends💐
Qahawa with the Commission is back with a special episode!

This week we sit down with Bahi from for a reflection on the power of community for q***r Africans across the continent and diaspora. At a time when many of us, across Africa are facing renewed attacks on their rights and dignity, solidarity is more important than ever.

This Pride asks us to imagine a world where q***r Africans should not have to leave home to find safety. Worlds where our communities can gather, organise, create, and dream without fear.

to all our LGBTIQ+ siblings across the African continent and diaspora❤️🏳️‍🌈

Yesterday, the Commission attended the National Memorial Sit-Down to honour the women lost to femicide, remember children lost to pedicide, and draw attention to the alarming number of missing children in Kenya💔.

We stood alongside Kenyan womxn in all their diversities to grieve, remember those we have lost, and demand justice and meaningful action against violence.

As we begin June, we are reminded that Pride began as a protest and showing up for causes that demand justice, dignity, and safety for all is part of that legacy. Our liberation is interconnected, and solidarity remains one of our greatest strengths✊🏾.

Happy Friday, folks! 🌞📚

We’re sharing some of the powerful reading recommendations Dr. Keguro Macharia offered during our recent IDAHOBIT gathering, Otherwise!

The conversations left us thinking deeply about life, liberation, memory, belonging, and the many ways people create language for themselves and each other.

If you’ve been looking for writing that challenges, nourishes, unsettles, and expands the imagination, we hope something here speaks to you. 💛

In honour of , our Wellness Department sat down for a candid conversation on what it takes to give care back to those who care for you. While the conversation was had from the lens of human rights defenders, we believe the same principles are applicable to all kinds of relationship.

Caring for those who care for you is one of the purest forms of love. The people who show up for us deserve the same kindness, patience, and support in return❤️

This week, on May 20th, 2026, The Kenyan High Court affirmed that transgender Kenyans are fully entitled to seek changes to gender and s*x markers on official documents.⚖️

But this victory did not begin in 2026. Long before this ruling, trans Kenyans were already fighting for dignity, recognition, and constitutional protection in courtrooms across the country.

Today, on the , we offer a reminder that family has never been one thing. It has always been built through care, safety, survival, love, responsibility, community, and choice.

At a time when foreign-funded anti-rights movements are attempting to dictate what “African family values” should look like, through fear, exclusion, and political scapegoating, q***r Africans continue to exist, love, nurture and build family in ways that are deeply rooted in care and community.

Because q***r people are not outside the African family story. We have always been part of it. And no imported culture war can erase that❤️
