Today, on World Ozone Day, we celebrate one of the greatest environmental success stories, the Montreal Protocol, and mark ten years of the Kigali Amendment.

In her video message, UN Environment Programme Executive Director, Inger Andersen, reminds us that protecting the ozone layer and tackling climate change go hand in hand. Cooling demand is rising fast, and we must meet it with solutions that are climate friendly, energy efficient, and accessible.

Together, through global cooperation and innovation, we can protect the ozone layer, cool the planet, and safeguard a healthier future for generations to come.

To celebrate the National Ozone Unit of Lebanon, in collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Environment and Montreal Protocol implementing partner United Nations Development Programme - UNDP is proud to share a short video linked to this year’s global theme: “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.”

The video highlights Lebanon’s ongoing efforts to advance sustainable cooling from specialised refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) training sessions in Dekwaneh, Sarafand, and Bakhoun that have equipped over 700 technicians, to the vital role of the Lebanese Customs Authorities in preventing the entry of controlled substances and supporting implementation of the Montreal Protocol.

Together, these actions showcase how national commitment and international cooperation can deliver climate‑friendly, energy‑efficient cooling solutions.

The Amendment has expanded the Protocol’s impact by driving the global phase down of HFCs—potent greenhouse gases—and accelerating the transition toward more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions.

This we also celebrate how over the past decade, the Kigali Amendment has promoted the use of energy efficient technologies, strengthening industrial capacity, and supporting innovation across the cooling sector.

Did you know that the Montreal Protocol has its own dedicated 'bank' 🏦 ? The Multilateral Fund is the funding mechanism supporting developing countries to meet their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. For over three decades, the MLF has enabled developing countries to phase out ozone‑depleting substances, adopt climate‑friendly alternatives, and strengthen compliance.

With more than US$ 4 billion disbursed across thousands of projects, the equitable financing has helped the Montreal Protocol drive global environmental success.

As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment, the Multilateral Fund continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the transition to sustainable cooling and the phase down of HFCs.
