MABWOK is committed to developing the potentials of Mukuru slum community members, support and facilitate their participation in sustainable development activities in order to enhance their livelihood and well being. It was established by a group of local youths to promote youth empowerment and community development through education, training and entrepreneurship. MABWOK has partnered with variou
s local and international organizations to deliver programs in Mukuru slum that have had significant impact on the community’s level of health, education, and youth livelihood. Residents of Nairobi’s informal settlements such as Mukuru have few resources in terms of health, sanitation, education, or adequate housing. Compounding the poverty experienced in the slums is Kenya’s high rate of unemployment, at over 40%, with almost two thirds of that being youth. Thus, those growing up in the slum have little opportunity to escape, leading to proliferation of drug use, prostitution and crime. Over the years, MABWOK has worked to mitigate these difficulties by offering a wide range of programs, including: Adult literacy initiative, early childhood development, and support for those living with HIV/AIDS, reproductive health education. Mabwok, recent focus has been looking towards sustainable development programs targeting youth livelihood, such as economic empowerment through savings and loans circles, entrepreneurship training and social enterprise.
