It was Mother's Day morning, and I was still rubbing sleep from my eyes when my daughter, bounced into the room with a huge grin on her face, holding a slightly crumpled card she made in school. "Happy Mother's Day, Mama!" she said, her enthusiasm infectious.
I smiled, feeling all the love and pride in the world. I hugged her tightly. "Thank you, sweetheart! This is the best gift I could ever get."
She looked at me, a little puzzled, and then asked, "When do we celebrate Father's Day?"
I blinked, unsure for a second. "Uh... well, it's usually in June," I replied.
Her eyes widened, and she nodded like she had just discovered a big mystery. âSo, we celebrate that too?â she asked.
I laughed and said, "Yes, we do! It's the day we celebrate Dad for all the things he does, just like how today is about celebrating me."
She stared at me thoughtfully for a second, then said, "So⊠if there's a Father's Day, and a Mother's Day, do we have a Children's Day?"
I froze mid-laugh. "Uhh... well, not exactly. But every day can be Children's Day if you really want it to be!" I said, trying to hide the amusement.
She crossed her arms, looking very serious. "Because I have a lot of good ideas. I think we should have a special day just for me."
I raised an eyebrow. "What would you do on Childrenâs Day, exactly?"
With the most dramatic flair a seven-year-old could muster, She stood up and said, "On Childrenâs Day, I won't go to school, i will stay in bed all day, watch cartoons, eat chocolate and ice creams, and never have to do anything! I think it's fair!"
I couldnât help but laugh. Her eyes narrowed, and she gave me the âI know youâre joking look, After a long negotiation, our Mother's Day became a hybrid of Motherâs Day, Fatherâs Day, and (unofficially) Childrenâs Dayâcomplete with a mountain of ice cream and the kind of laughter only a childâs imagination could bring.
I realized that in children world, they desire to be celebrated, appreciated and valued. And who knew? Maybe we did need a Children's Day after all.
