While land access remains a major barrier for youth entering agriculture, the real growth opportunities sit beyond primary production. At the GreenWorks for Africa forum, key discussions highlighted how young innovators can transform the continent's food security without owning a single acre.

By scaling digital advisory platforms, streamlining product aggregation, and providing last-mile logistics, youth are bridging critical market gaps for local farmers. Expanding into agro-processing and mechanization services offers even higher-value opportunities to modernize the sector, prove that agribusiness is broader than farming, and lead the future of sustainable food systems across Africa.

Africa’s demographic future is also its green economy opportunity.

By 2050, Africa’s population is projected to reach 2.5 billion, including more than 1.3 billion people under 30. The question is whether our economies, cities and skills systems will be ready for this generation.

At the GreenWorks 4 Africa Forum, Engineer Michael Muchiri, highlighted the need to prepare now, particularly as Africa’s cities continue to grow.

This means building market-responsive skills systems, modernising curricula, recognising skills gained through experience and designing cities with green buildings, climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable transport.

Africa’s youth population is not simply a challenge to manage but a workforce and a source of innovation capable of driving the continent’s green transformation. We must connect young people to the skills, industries and infrastructure they need to participate in, and lead the green economy.

Circularity requires more than better waste management. It calls for the infrastructure, financing, technology and skills needed to build systems that can operate and grow beyond short-term projects and grant funding. It also means recognising the people already driving these systems.

Policy is where climate ambition becomes action.

At the GreenWorks 4 Africa Forum, Boaz Keizire, Director for Policy and State Capability at AGRA, highlighted the critical role of policy in creating the conditions for Africa’s green transition to deliver real economic opportunity.

Africa’s climate, energy, agriculture and food systems are deeply interconnected. Therefore responding to these challenges requires more than isolated interventions. It requires policies that connect systems, enable investment, support innovation and create pathways for green jobs and inclusive growth.

As Africa looks towards COP32 in Ethiopia, the focus is whether our policies, institutions and markets are ready to support and scale them. And that is at the heart of the conversation: connecting policy, skills, finance, innovation and markets to ensure Africa’s green transition creates tangible opportunities for its people.

The transition will not be driven by policy alone. But without the right policy, even the most promising solutions can struggle to scale.

The future of work is changing and in Matzikama, we’re making sure young people are ready to be part of it.

To help young people thrive in a changing local economy, Jacobs Ladder Africa-ZA, in partnership with House of Boniwe and Matzikama Municipality, collaborating with Contact Staff and Skills Solutions (CSSS), and the Department of Labour came together in bringing practical pathways for young people to access skills, work opportunities and livelihoods that respond to the needs of a changing local economy, through launching the Labour Activation Programme in Vredendal, Matzikama.

Through programmes designed around green skills, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, waste management and enterprise development, we’re connecting people to opportunities that are not just about getting a job, but about building the skills, experience and businesses that Matzikama needs.

Kenya’s renewable energy progress demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is embedded in national development. But translating this momentum into continent-wide economic transformation requires more than policy commitments. It calls for 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀.
