The consequences of are being felt globally, with sub-Saharan Africa particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on rainfed and low resilience to extreme weather events. The fulfilment of the to reduce global warming requires strong international cooperation and political commitment from all countries. It's great to see a number of African nations showing readiness to lead in climate change . The participation of young individuals in the Climate Diplomacy Academy 2024 ( ), in partnership with Strathmore University's UNESCO Chair Strathmore and Climate Diplomacy and Security, marks a significant step forward. This initiative highlights the need for ongoing efforts to nurture a new generation of who can effectively engage in international climate policy and negotiations.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the primary global policy framework addressing climate change, yet Africa faces significant challenges due to limited capacity in international climate policy discussions. This limitation hinders the advancement of at both regional and national levels. and negotiations are highly technical and complex, making it challenging for new negotiators to grasp the intricate details even after years of involvement. The Climate Diplomacy Academy aims to bridge this gap, equipping new leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to drive impactful climate actions.

On April 19th 2024, we hosted the "Energy, Trade and Climate Dialogue III" in Maputo, Mozambique. This transformative event brought together and from various sectors to discuss the crucial intersection of , , and in driving sustainable development and economic growth.
Here are some key takeaways from the dialogue:

1️⃣ Exploring New Trade Policies: We looked into the intricate connection between trade, energy, and climate, examining innovative approaches such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism ) and carbon markets to tackle climate challenges while fostering economic prosperity.

2️⃣ Empowering African Nations: It was inspiring to discuss how countries can leverage emerging trade issues to their advantage and chart a path towards . The insights shared shed light on actionable steps that can be taken to maximize benefits and mitigate challenges.

3️⃣ Formulating Policy Recommendations: A crucial aspect of the was the emphasis on supporting institutions and think tanks in crafting recommendations for African governments. By aligning trade- and energy-related climate policies, African Nations can accelerate progress towards a collective climate goals.

Notable speakers, including H.E. Münch, the Ambassador of Germany to Mozambique, and Ms. Paula Vázquez Horyaans, Head of Cooperation Delegation to Mozambique, provided invaluable insights. Inspector General Jose highlighted Mozambique's strides in promoting carbon credit projects, underscoring the country's immense potential in forestry and renewable energy sectors.

The dialogue was preceded by the inaugural German-Mozambican Climate Talk, reaffirming the commitment of the German Embassy in Mozambique to address climate change issues. As H.E. Ronald Münch emphasized, carbon market development and initiatives like CBAM are pivotal in achieving global climate targets.

The attendance of the Energy, Trade and Climate Dialogue III included Members of Parliament from Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini, Seychelles, Namibia, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum, regional and international think tanks, civil society representatives, academia and the private sector. This collective effort highlights the urgency and importance of collaborative action in advancing sustainable development agendas.

After a thorough review of numerous applications for the , we extend our gratitude to all applicants who dedicated their time to apply for a position in the academy. Each application demonstrated merit and potential, although we were only able to accommodate a limited number of participants. to the individuals who successfully qualified and were selected to join the . We eagerly anticipate commencing our sessions soon.

The Climate Diplomacy Academy ( CDA), is implemented by Regional Programme Energy Security and Climate Change in SSA_KAS , in collaboration with UNESCO Chair Strathmore and Climate Diplomacy and Security, serves as a platform to develop the capacities of young and aspiring climate change , , and from across . The academy focuses on the critical role of climate diplomacy and international cooperation in addressing climate action challenges.
Particularly, the CDA aims to enhance participants' understanding of the challenges commonly faced by diplomats and negotiators in advancing global climate goals, notably those outlined in the Paris Agreement. African countries face a triple challenge—poverty reduction, emissions cuts, and inequality—under the 's aspirations. However, global trade and finance hurdles often impede their climate resilience efforts.

Key criteria for enhanced cooperation include environmental outcomes, transformative potential, economic performance, and institutional strength. These factors are pivotal in guiding cooperative initiatives across mitigation, adaptation, and implementation strategies.
