Ruth Muendo, our WUSC Kenya Country Director and ACT Project Director, delivering her opening remarks at the 2026 ECD Webinar Series on *Empowering Women & Men through Enhanced Childcare Support Systems*, happening now.

In her remarks, Ruth emphasized that we cannot build effective childcare systems without men. Engaging men in decision-making spaces, and working with community leaders to shift norms, so that men are not “helping,” but are recognized as equal partners in care.

Going forward, this means childcare must be treated as a core economic investment, not a social afterthought. When childcare is intentionally integrated into systems and policies, the impact is clear:
• Women participate more in the economy
• Families become more stable
• Children thrive
• Communities grow more resilient

We must be willing to invest and have more men actively involved at the scale required to drive meaningful change within this sector.

Last week, we had the pleasure of showcasing WUSC’s work in Kenya at the International Women’s Day 2026 Forum, hosted by the High Commission of Canada to Kenya in partnership with Supivaa Advisory Group.

Under the theme “Investing in the Future: How Partnerships Advance Women and Youth,” the forum created space for meaningful conversations, collaboration, and connection across the ecosystem.

A key highlight was the Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E Joshua Tabah visit to our exhibition, where he had a conversation with WUSC Kenya Country Director Ruth Muendo, around Action for paid Childcare Sector Transformation (ACT) Project, an initiative that seeks to transform paid childcare from a job of last resort into a dignified, fairly compensated, and recognized profession.

Through the ACT Project, WUSC is working to:
• Strengthen networks of women childcare providers
• Support gender-responsive childcare policies
• Professionalize the childcare workforce
• Promote accountability for workers’ rights
• Improve access to tailored financial and business support

Last week, the ACT Project supported a powerful public participation forum in Nairobi on the ratification of ILO Conventions C189 (Domestic Workers) and C190 (Violence & Harassment).

In his address, Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Mr. Shadrack Mwangolo Mwadime, described ratification as a forward-looking investment. One that reinforces Kenya’s constitutional commitment to fair labour practices, advances gender equality, and supports national priorities under Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

WUSC Kenya Country Director, Ruth Muendo, also joined the national dialogue, spotlighting the urgent need to strengthen protections for domestic workers.
Her message was clear: ratifying C189 and C190 is a critical step, but it’s not enough. Real change requires stronger legal protections, expanded social protection, and sustained investment in training and professionalizing childcare work.

Because when we amplify workers’ voices and recognize care work for what it is, we move closer to fair wages, better working conditions, and dignity for the women who care for our children every day.

For more than 40 years, WUSC has partnered with post-secondary institutions across Canada through the Student Refugee Program (SRP) to expand access to education and resettlement for young refugees.

Through our new Strengthen Skills Training Ecosystems & Pathways (STEP) initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada, we will scale up our work to support additional refugees and host community members.

STEP is focused on delivering sustainable solutions that connect youth to meaningful employment in Kenya and around the world, including in sectors that will strengthen the Canadian economy.
