We are a national movement of grassroots women who are striving to participate in decisions that directly impact them and their communities. It is the duty of our movement to shift the role of women in disadvantaged communities from vulnerable, victimized recipients of charity to empowered, effective leaders in community development work.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱?

For Susan Wanjiru, it has become a journey of growing food, preserving seeds, strengthening her household's resilience and inspiring others.

Since beginning her agroecology journey through the Rural Women Cultivating Change (RWCC) Project, Susan has transformed her farm into a diverse food system with 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 80 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, alongside trees that provide shade and support resilience in changing weather conditions.

The impact goes beyond her own household. Her farm has become a space for learning, with fellow farmers and neighbours visiting to see what she is growing and, in some cases, drawing inspiration for their own farms.

🌱 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱. 𝗜𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲.

Last week marked an important milestone for in Laikipia as we joined the official launch of the County Government of Laikipia Agroecology Policy 2026–2032, a framework that sets out a pathway for transforming agriculture and food systems through practices that strengthen food security, climate resilience and healthy ecosystems.

GROOTS Kenya is proud to have contributed to this process as a member of the Technical Working Group, represented by grassroots champion, Cecilia M’mburugu since 2024.

Today, our work in Laikipia spans 132 agroecology groups across eight wards: Nanyuki, Igwamiti, Marmanet, Segera, Mukogodo West, Tigithi, Umande and Salama. These groups provide a strong foundation for advancing locally led agroecological practices as the County moves into implementation of the policy.

Present at the launch were 50 grassroots champions, who participated in the event and showcased local seed varieties during the exhibition putting farmers’ knowledge, practices and solutions at the centre of the conversation.

As implementation begins, we look forward to continuing to work alongside the Laikipia County Government.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲?

Last week during Kenya Youth in Agrifood Systems Summit, we brought grassroots young women to the conversation through our plenary, “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲, 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲.”

Their stories from Laikipia, Kitui, Murang’a and Nairobi challenge us to look beyond how we can 𝗴𝗲𝘁 young people into agriculture and instead ask what becomes possible when they have the 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀, 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆.

On September 7th, together with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the CGIAR, we held an introductory engagement with the The County Government of Bomet ahead of our upcoming operations in the county.

The meeting brought together Dr. Kibet Sitienei, Chief Officer for Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Climate Change; Cherono Koskey, Director of Gender; and Rotich Philip, Assistant Director for Youth Affairs, alongside other county representatives.

The conversation focused on our previous work in Bomet, the upcoming project and planned activities, while creating space to understand the County’s priorities and identify areas of synergy.

Discussions highlighted opportunities around climate-resilient livelihoods, agroecology, agricultural value chains and strengthening women-led community organisations.

We appreciate the County Government of Bomet for the constructive engagement and look forward to building on these conversations as the work progresses.

Africa is moving from climate commitments to implementation. The question is: 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲?

𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 14th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-XIV) in Addis Ababa, under the theme “𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗹é𝗺–𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝗮–𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽.”

We are bringing the experiences and solutions of grassroots women into this important conversation.

Through our work on 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻-𝗟𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, we are demonstrating how women’s knowledge, community-generated evidence and accessible climate data can support resilient livelihoods, stronger local economies and climate action that communities can 𝘀𝗲𝗲, 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻.

Today, on the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗲𝘀, we join the global call for action that puts clean air, healthy communities and a resilient planet at the centre.

As a movement, we see climate and environmental action as something that must be 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱. Through community-led climate action, agroecology and the restoration of healthy ecosystems, grassroots women are already driving solutions that strengthen livelihoods, protect natural resources and build resilience.

This year’s theme, “𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻,” reminds us that air pollution and climate change cannot be tackled in isolation. The choices we make today can create healthier communities, stronger livelihoods and a healthier planet.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

During the Women and Land in Zimbabwe( WLZ) Rural Women’s Assembly, we caught up with 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝘆 𝗡𝗷𝗼𝗸𝗶, 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻, to hear about her experience.

Her biggest takeaway? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘆. These honest experiences opened up opportunities for deeper learning, exchange and solidarity across different regions and countries.

Tomorrow, GROOTS Kenya will join the County Government of Laikipia for the official launch of the 𝗟𝗮𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 (2026–2032), a significant milestone in advancing sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems in the county.

We are proud to have been part of this journey, including through the participation of our Grassroots Champion, Cecilia M'mburugu, as a member of the 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 that contributed to the development of the policy.

50 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 will join the launch, bringing the experiences and perspectives of farmers and communities into the conversation. Cecilia will also speak during the session on “𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆,” highlighting the role farmers are playing in advancing agroecological practices on the ground.

For GROOTS Kenya, agroecology is about more than sustainable farming practices. It is about building 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, while ensuring that farmers, particularly grassroots women are recognised as 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
