A major milestone in advancing child online safety in Kenya.

Last week, Fact Forward Digital Foundation, as the lead developer of the Digital Child Protection Toolkit, officially launched the resource at Kilimani Primary School. The toolkit was co-authored by Brave Movement Kenya, reflecting the strength of partnership in protecting children in the digital age.

The launch was attended by representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, educators, child protection practitioners, and development partners, all united by a shared commitment to creating safer digital spaces for children.

We sincerely thank the government representatives for their participation and recognition of the toolkit as a practical resource for strengthening digital literacy, promoting responsible digital citizenship, and protecting children from online harm.
We are equally grateful to Brave Movement Kenya for their invaluable collaboration as co-authors of the toolkit and for their continued commitment to ending violence against children.

When children go online to learn, we must ask: are we equipping them to stay safe online? 🤔

✅Do they understand how to search critically and wisely, or are they merely learning to type keywords?

✅Are teachers confident in using child-friendly search tools and guiding students through the digital landscape?

✅Most importantly, do parents have the awareness and time to understand what happens once their child's phone or tablet is in their hands?

✅Digital education is no longer just about providing devices. It's about actively preparing children to navigate an online world filled with both incredible opportunities and significant risks.

Watching our learners engage with Smart Searching today reinforced that media literacy is now a fundamental skill, as essential as reading and writing.

As educators, parents, and caregivers, we have a duty to ensure children are prepared for the digital world not just introduced to it.

Together, we can create a digital world where every child is safe, informed, empowered, and ready to thrive.

Yesterday, we successfully delivered Module 3 of our Media Literacy Toolkit at Bethany School, equipping learners with practical skills to become safer, smarter, and more responsible digital citizens.

The lesson began with a quick recap of the previous session before learners explored what makes a website trustworthy and why choosing the right search words matters.

Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, they discovered that searching "Why do bees matter to plants?"provides much better information than simply searching "Bees."

Working in groups, learners researched questions, compared websites, and practised asking important fact-checking questions:

✅ Who created this information?
✅ Can I trust it?
✅ Does it answer my question?

The excitement continued with a "Safe or Unsafe" challenge, where learners identified clues that help them browse safely online from recognising secure websites and avoiding suspicious pop-ups to understanding why they should never share personal information or passwords.

One of the most important lessons was that while "https://" indicates a more secure connection, it does not automatically mean the information is true. Learners were encouraged to always check who created the content and compare information from trusted sources.

The session concluded with a reflection, allowing learners to reflect on what they had learned and demonstrate their growing confidence in searching, verifying information, and staying safe online.

What does foundational media literacy for children look like?

Well? It isn’t about turning them into mini fact-checkers; it’s about giving them simple, repeatable ways to make sense of what they see, hear, and share. At its core, it fosters habits of curiosity rather than suspicion.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

- Recognizing different types of media
- Understanding that people make media
- Responsible media use
- Emotional awareness and self-regulation
- Asking basic question etc

Instead of accepting content at face value, children learn to ask simple prompts like:
🤔Who made this?
🤔Why did they make it?
🤔How does it make me feel?

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s building a habit of pausing and thinking. Kids don’t need complex terminology early on; they need consistent exposure to simple questions and conversations.

Last week's media literacy session at Bethany School was a fantastic experience as we worked through Module 2 of our hashtag toolkit. The energy in the room was truly inspiring! We are capturing the lively moments during our interactive Kahoot! review session. It was exciting to see the students confidently apply their knowledge, particularly in distinguishing between hashtag and hashtag .

This activity was more than just a game; it reflected how much the learners were absorbing and how effectively they were beginning to think critically about the information they encountered. Watching them analyze statements, question assumptions, and justify their choices demonstrated meaningful progress in their understanding.

Why is this important?

In today’s fast-paced digital world, children are constantly exposed to a wide range of information, particularly through social media and peer interactions. The ability to distinguish between facts and opinions is a foundational skill that empowers them to navigate this landscape responsibly.

By practicing these skills early, learners develop stronger critical thinking skills. They become more thoughtful decision-makers, better communicators, and more discerning consumers of information. This not only boosts their confidence in academic settings but also equips them with essential life skills.

Most importantly, fostering this awareness helps combat the spread of hashtag . When children can question what they see and hear, they are less likely to accept or share inaccurate information. As part of the Fact Forward Digital school outreach digital media literacy program, yesterday, learners at Bethany Academy in Nairobi commenced a new module titled "Truth Detectives: Understanding and ."

In this module, learners actively made distinctions between facts and opinions. They were also introduced to effective kid-friendly search tools, such as Kiddle, and how to apply Google SafeSearch.
