What does foundational media literacy for children look like?

Well? It isn’t about turning them into mini fact-checkers; it’s about giving them simple, repeatable ways to make sense of what they see, hear, and share. At its core, it fosters habits of curiosity rather than suspicion.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

- Recognizing different types of media
- Understanding that people make media
- Responsible media use
- Emotional awareness and self-regulation
- Asking basic question etc

Instead of accepting content at face value, children learn to ask simple prompts like:
🤔Who made this?
🤔Why did they make it?
🤔How does it make me feel?

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s building a habit of pausing and thinking. Kids don’t need complex terminology early on; they need consistent exposure to simple questions and conversations.

Last week's media literacy session at Bethany School was a fantastic experience as we worked through Module 2 of our hashtag toolkit. The energy in the room was truly inspiring! We are capturing the lively moments during our interactive Kahoot! review session. It was exciting to see the students confidently apply their knowledge, particularly in distinguishing between hashtag and hashtag .

This activity was more than just a game; it reflected how much the learners were absorbing and how effectively they were beginning to think critically about the information they encountered. Watching them analyze statements, question assumptions, and justify their choices demonstrated meaningful progress in their understanding.

Why is this important?

In today’s fast-paced digital world, children are constantly exposed to a wide range of information, particularly through social media and peer interactions. The ability to distinguish between facts and opinions is a foundational skill that empowers them to navigate this landscape responsibly.

By practicing these skills early, learners develop stronger critical thinking skills. They become more thoughtful decision-makers, better communicators, and more discerning consumers of information. This not only boosts their confidence in academic settings but also equips them with essential life skills.

Most importantly, fostering this awareness helps combat the spread of hashtag . When children can question what they see and hear, they are less likely to accept or share inaccurate information. Instead, they become part of the solution, promoting truth, clarity, and responsible digital citizenship within their communities.

Moments like these remind us that learning can be both fun and impactful. We are proud to see our learners growing into curious, informed, and thoughtful individuals.

Imagine growing up in today’s world.

Every day, you get bombarded with tons of notifications!

🫣 Opinions presented as facts

Now, consider the challenge of distinguishing what’s real.

Well, for many children and teenagers, this is their daily reality.

The digital world presents extraordinary opportunities for learning and connection. However, without the necessary skills, it can quickly become overwhelming.

This is precisely why media literacy education is crucial.

The education system must actively embed lessons that equip students with the skills they need to question, verify, and comprehend the information they encounter online.

It's time to prioritize media literacy and prepare our youth for the challenges of the digital age.

As part of the Fact Forward Digital school outreach digital media literacy program, yesterday, learners at Bethany Academy in Nairobi commenced a new module titled "Truth Detectives: Understanding and ."

In this module, learners actively made distinctions between facts and opinions. They were also introduced to effective kid-friendly search tools, such as Kiddle, and how to apply Google SafeSearch.

In their own way, learners provided relevant examples of Facts and Opinions. Check out our comprehensive learning toolkit here:

In our upcoming session with Bethany, we will focus on additional trusted information resources that learners can utilize for their school research and projects.

At Fact Forward Digital Foundation, we are committed to teaching digital media literacy through hands-on, practical experiences. Thanks to our lead educator, Mr. Ndirangu & Our Founder, Miss Nadia Noor

WHAT WE KNOW

✅Teaching children news and misinformation is essential to help them understand that intent and context are crucial, and that even well-meaning individuals can accidentally spread misinformation.

✅ Teaching children to check whether the same information appears in multiple reliable sources helps them strengthen their ability to assess information sources critically.

✅ Helping children identify posts that use sensational language, shocking claims, or dramatic headlines designed to provoke immediate reactions helps them recognize online manipulation

✅ Showing children how photos and videos can be edited, taken out of context, or reused from unrelated events builds their verification skills.

✅ Teaching them a simple rule: “Stop, check, think, then share.” This approach cultivates critical thinking instead of encouraging passive consumption of information.

The ultimate goal of addressing real-life online threats is not to instill fear but to create responsible digital citizens. Children should feel empowered to:

🟩 Question suspicious information
🟩 Avoid disseminating unverified content
🟩 Support peers who may be victims of cyberbullying
🟩 Learn how to report harmful or misleading content when necessary
🟩 Engage online respectfully and constructively.

In 2025, as part of our focused learning initiative, we engaged children in a dynamic play-and-learn activity designed to promote digital wellness. This experience powerfully reinforces an essential truth for both parents and educators: balancing screen time with outdoor and hands-on play is not just beneficial; it is absolutely imperative for cultivating well-rounded, curious, and resilient children.

Play is not merely an escape from learning; it is a fundamental pillar of the learning process itself.

In a world increasingly dominated by technology, these moments of unstructured play are crucial for breaking the cycle of digital monotony. By encouraging children to immerse themselves in offline activities and step away from screens and conventional classroom settings, we provide them with the invaluable opportunity to explore, engage, and connect through the joy of play.

Fostering digital wellness in children means nurturing a balanced and healthy relationship with technology. It emphasizes the importance of mindful usage and the successful integration of digital activities with enriching offline experiences, ultimately enhancing their emotional, physical, and social well-being.
