📢 A productive start to 2026 for Kenya's organic farming community!

The Kenya National PGS Committee successfully held its 1st Committee Meeting of the year on 31st March 2026 at Maxland Hotel.

The committee covered key agenda items, including:
✅ Review of the PGS Scoring Tool
✅ Assessment of recently reviewed PGS Groups across the country
✅ Planning for the National PGS Workshop 2026

It was a milestone session that reaffirmed our collective commitment to strengthening Participatory Guarantee Systems in Kenya, keeping farmers, consumers, and assessors aligned around the highest organic standards.

We look forward to sharing more updates as we move forward with this year's activities.

Yesterday, we have successfully concluded a three-day Quality Management Systems (QMS) training in Busia County with Lead Farmer Groups (Trainers of Trainers – ToTs).

The training, facilitated by Samuel Ndungu, Programmes Manager at Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN), focused on strengthening capacity in Organic Certification and Internal Control Systems (ICS). Key topics covered included internal regulations and sanctions, land preparation, pest and disease management, composting, post-harvest handling, record keeping, risk management, and operation of the ICS.

This training was conducted under the Improving Chia and Sesame Smallholders’ Livelihoods through Climate Smart Practices project, aimed at enhancing compliance, productivity, and market access for smallholder farmers.

Using interactive presentations, group discussions, plenary sessions, scenario-based exercises, and action planning, the ToTs are now equipped to cascade QMS knowledge to farmers in their clusters.

We look forward to the next phase as cluster-level farmer trainings begin next week.

We are pleased to share that KOAN and Practical Action successfully conducted field visits to schools, farmer groups, markets, and traders in Mathioya and Kigumo Subcounties, Murang’a County.

During the visit we:
- Held Key Informant Interviews (KII) with teachers to better understand how the school feeding program operates and the challenges faced.
- Conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with farmers to explore crops grown, group operations, and key production and market challenges.
- Carried out Rapid Market Assessments (RMA) to identify business opportunities and review existing market concepts.

The team also introduced the School Feeding Program Project and clarified the roles of each partner organization.

The sessions were highly interactive and insightful, strengthening collaboration across the value chain.

Strengthening farmer-led organic certification under the Greener Greens Project 🌿

Last week in Kiharu Sub-County, Murang'a County, Sylvia and Jackie facilitated a Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) training for the Jijenge and Merit Groups.

The session focused on:

✅ Roles and responsibilities within a PGS group
✅ Organic production standards and compliance

These trainings are essential in empowering farmers to uphold organic integrity, strengthen their group systems, and prepare for market opportunities.

A successful step forward for organic farmers in Ithanga! 🌶️

On Friday, 20th February 2026, farmers met with Enviu alongside partners including Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) and YARD to explore market opportunities for organic chilli production.

The trader expressed strong interest in Cayenne and Bird’s Eye chillies, with discussions covering production, pricing, volumes, planting calendars, and logistics. This resulted in a mutual agreement to begin contract farming, starting with 22 farmers and scaling up progressively.

These farmers, organized under Busara Self Help Group, Gathaka Kia Group, and Tripple G, proudly received Kilimohai Organic PGS certification in 2025 — a testament to their commitment to organic integrity.

With land and water ready, and agronomic support visits beginning this week, Ithanga farmers are set to grow high-value organic chillies for the market.

This milestone reflects the power of partnerships in creating sustainable livelihoods.

Strengthening organic integrity from the ground up! 🌱

Sylvia and Jackie recently conducted ongoing Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) trainings with the Nyanginda and Gagikigi Vegetable Business Network (VBNs). The latest session focused on understanding roles within the PGS structure and organic production standards.

These trainings are essential in empowering farmers to uphold organic principles, ensure quality assurance, and build trust within local markets.

Together, we are building strong farmer-led systems that promote transparency, accountability, and sustainable livelihoods under the Greener Greens Project supported by World Vegetable Centre.

Spotlight on Gatanga Organic Farmers Market (GOFAM) 🌿

Gatanga Organic Farmers Market (GOFAM) is one of the active Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) groups in Murang’a County, based in Mugumo-ini Ward. Formed in 2019 and registered as a Self-Help Group (SHG), GOFAM brings together 27 active members (16 women and 11 men, including youth) committed to organic farming.

The group specializes in herb production including rosemary, lemongrass, hibiscus, cloves, and mint alongside fruits, vegetables, and tubers. They are also advancing into value addition, with exciting products such as rosemary tea and frankincense hydrosol.

GOFAM supplies products to farmers’ markets and outlets including Fine Aromas and Sylvia’s Basket, among others. The group has received training on organic production, PGS, market linkages, and networking through the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN).
