Today, the world marks Desertification and Drought Day 2026 under the theme "Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore." This year's global observance is particularly significant as Kenya hosts the international celebrations in Kilifi County, highlighting the critical role of rangelands in climate resilience, food security, water security, biodiversity conservation, and the livelihoods of pastoralist communities.
As climate change, land degradation, and prolonged droughts continue to threaten ecosystems and communities across Africa, this day reminds us that healthy landscapes are the foundation of sustainable development. Restoring degraded lands, protecting water resources, promoting sustainable land management, and investing in nature-based solutions are no longer optional—they are essential for securing our future.
For Kenya, and particularly for counties facing climate vulnerabilities, the message is clear: the fight against desertification is the fight for climate resilience, food security, and community prosperity. Through ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, and community-led conservation initiatives, we can reverse land degradation and build a more resilient future for generations to come.
On this important day, let us all commit to recognizing the value of our rangelands, respecting the communities that depend on them, and restoring degraded landscapes for a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient Africa.
