Kenya’s future fact-checkers are here 🇰🇪📊

On 29 May 2026, Africa Check’s Kenya team led by Alphonce and Makinia partnered with DIMLIS Africa to deliver an information integrity bootcamp at Zetech University.

The event brought together 126 university students from 13 institutions, convened by the Journalism Students Association of Kenya, which designated the bootcamp as its flagship national gathering for the year.

Across the four bootcamps held in 2026, 533 students have now been trained in fact-checking, data and media literacy, digital hygiene and AI literacy.

This growing network of media-literate young people strengthens Africa Check’s goal of building a pipeline of informed, verification-savvy citizens — a critical foundation as Kenya prepares for August 2027 general elections.

Zombie claims don’t die… they just respawn in your group chat 👻📲

You’ve seen them before: “WhatsApp Gold”, “killer biscuits”, miracle cures, or that urgent warning your aunt forwards every six months. Different packaging, same old hoax.

That’s what we call zombie claims — recycled false info that keeps coming back even after it’s been debunked.

Here’s how to keep them from biting again:

🔎 Follow the paper trail — a quick search usually leads straight to fact-checks
📣 Check the source — no proof, no trust
😡 Beware of the emotion bait — if it’s all panic and “share NOW”, be suspicious
📅 Check the date — old stories often return disguised as “breaking news”
🧠 Stay informed — official and trusted sources beat viral forwards every time

Before you share, pause and verify. You might just stop a zombie in its tracks.

Zombie claims don’t bite, but they’re annoying. Do your part to stop them resurrecting by following our tips for spotting recycled hoaxes.

💊 "One weird trick." 🤫 "Doctors hate this secret."

Sound familiar? Scammers are increasingly using fake health claims and so-called "health secrets" to drive traffic to their websites.

Don't get caught out. Here are some tips to help you spot the warning signs and protect yourself online.

One example? Posts circulating in South Africa claim you can discover the "5 amazing benefits" of okra water by commenting "hello". But this isn’t trustworthy health advice - it’s engagement bait designed to boost reach and drive traffic.

Fuel prices in Kenya keep climbing. But taxes are only part of the story.

Our latest explainer unpacks what really drives the cost of every litre of petrol and diesel — from global oil markets and exchange rates to import costs, government deals and fuel levies.

What we found:
• Import costs make up the biggest share of the price
• Taxes are significant — but not the 50% often claimed online
• Only one levy directly affects pump prices
• Currency fluctuations and state agreements also play a major role

Read the full breakdown: https://africacheck.info/kenya_fuel_prices

Consumers have been hit hard by rising pump prices. Here’s what’s driving the pain.
