Forward we march!

Rabies is one of the world’s most terrifying zoonotic diseases. Once clinical symptoms appear, its fatality rate is almost 100%. It claims tens of thousands of precious human lives every year, predominantly in vulnerable and remote communities where resources are scarce.

Yet, despite its deadly nature, rabies is entirely 100% preventable. To mark World Rabies Day 2026, Utunzi Africa joined other stakeholders in Mogotio, Baringo County to vaccinate donkeys, dogs & cats and sensitize the community on rabies. Kenya targets to achieve a zero fatality rate in rabies cases by Vision 2030 and every vaccination is a step towards an achievable goal.

WORLD RABIES DAY 2026 – MOGOTIO, BARINGO COUNTY

In partnership with Working Animals International and Baringo County Government, Utunzi Africa is marking World Rabies Day in Mogotio, Baringo County, bringing together donkey and dog owners to promote responsible animal care, rabies prevention and healthier communities.

We invite all donkey, dog and cat owners in Mogotio and surrounding areas to show up and take part in this important community event.

Join us as we raise awareness, protect our animals and work together towards a rabies-free community.

When resource scarcity triggers human conflict, animals are never just bystander casualties; they are often the very center of the crisis.

In the ASAL regions of Kenya, particularly along the West Pokot and Turkana borders, recurring intercommunal conflicts have historically been driven by climate-induced droughts, dwindling pasture and water scarcity. Under extreme environmental stress, cattle rustling and raids escalate, turning livestock, the sole lifeline of these pastoralist communities, into focal points of violence.

This International Day of Peace, as the UN calls on the world to “Invest in Peace,” we must remember that building stable societies requires protecting the animals that sustain them.

Let us choose cooperation over conflict. Let us invest in peace for all.

Utunzi Africa New Programmatic Area: Fish Welfare

Last Friday, Utunzi Africa spent the day visiting fish cage farms on Lake Victoria and engaging with local stakeholders to learn more about fish welfare in Lake Victoria basin area.

Kenya’s aquaculture sector is growing rapidly, bringing new opportunities for food security & livelihoods and raising important questions about the welfare of farmed fish.

We’re beginning to explore what fish welfare looks like in Kenya, what we know, and how we can best support the welfare of farmed fish in Kenya.

This is the start of something new at Utunzi Africa.

Standing with Working Animals in Times of Drought

We continue to strengthen our efforts to mitigate the devastating effects of drought through our Multi-County Drought Intervention Project.

Yesterday, in Kapua, Kalokol Ward, Turkana County, we worked alongside the Turkana County Government and other stakeholders to provide critical veterinary services to approximately 100 donkeys.

The intervention included feed distribution,vaccination, deworming, treatment, and general veterinary care, helping protect these hardworking animals whose health and wellbeing are closely linked to the livelihoods of the communities that depend on them.

In times of crisis, no animal should be left behind.

Together, we can build more resilient communities while ensuring the welfare of the animals that serve them.

Utunzi Africa is participating in Turkana County animal welfare campaign

We are proud to participate in the Turkana County Animal Welfare Campaign, themed “Kick Rabies & Hydatidosis Diseases Out of Turkana County.”

Join us from 1st–3rd September as we work to improve animal welfare, public health and community wellbeing through:

🐕 Dog and cat population control through spaying and neutering
💉 Dog and cat vaccination against rabies
🐴 Donkey welfare promotion and treatment
🌳 Tree planting and school mentorship
