Sustainable Health Systems International (SHSI) is an organization that was born out of the need to develop sustainable solutions to address Epidemics and Mental Health problems that fit into the limited resources of most African communities. The inception of this organization started with the devastating Ebola Epidemic in West Africa in 2014 that mainly affected Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.
The epidemic did not only reveal systemic weaknesses but also demonstrated that low resourced countries/ communities can capitalize on simple, cost effective and sustainable systems that fit into their local resources to handle health
challenges, particularly emerging and re-emerging epidemics and mental health problems. SHSI works with low resourced communities in Africa to set up sustainable structures that focus on infectious disease epidemic control and mental
health problems through strengthening primary care to provide mental health services, increase
community involvement in health care decisions
and policy, safety and hygiene management in health facilities, the use of community health workers as key assets in the surveillance and control of epidemics and in the provision of mental health services in sustainable and cost effective ways.
