Today, we officially unveiled the 1st Status of Junior School Education (JSE) Report | 2026 and the 3rd Senior School Survey (SESS) Report | 2026, bringing critical evidence on access, learning, resources, equity and participation into the education conversation.

The launch marks not the end, but the beginning of an important conversation: How do we turn evidence into action for a more just education system for every learner?

Only 27.5% of Junior Schools have a functional science laboratory.

Only 27% have a library.

And the gaps are even wider across school types and locations, with public and rural schools generally less equipped than private and urban schools.

Because putting learners in classrooms is not enough. They need the resources, facilities and learning environment required to learn.

The transition to Junior School comes with a cost, and that cost is not the same for every family.

Estimated entry costs range from:

KES 8,186

Rural public schools

to approximately

KES 22,000

Private schools

School fees make up the largest share of the cost across school types and locations.

Access must be affordable if it is to be truly equitable.
