Once it enters your body, within five hours it has circulated everywhere — the liver, kidneys, blood, even the nails.
That is the reality of , a highly pesticide still widely used in Kenya.

In villages like Timau, Naivasha, Thika, and Kirinyaga, farmers are falling sick. Some are dying. Others live with , Parkinsonism, nerve damage, kidney failure, infertility, and chronic pain. Blood and urine tests confirm what communities have long suspected: the poison is already inside their bodies — even years after leaving the farms.

All 70 farmers tested had traces of paraquat. Every single one.

This is not accidental.
Banned continue to circulate through weak regulation, porous borders, counterfeit trade, and a system that prioritises export standards over the health of Kenyan consumers. sprayed for “the market” end up on our plates. Washing them removes only a fraction of the residue. The rest enters our bodies — silently, daily.

Farmers spray without protective gear. Some mix chemicals with bare hands. Others chew miraa freshly sprayed with . And while Europe bans these substances to protect its citizens, the same chemicals are exported to Africa.

This is not just a farming issue.

It is a public , an justice issue, and a failure.

Farmers spray without protective gear. Some mix chemicals with bare hands. Others chew miraa that has been freshly sprayed with and bio-pesticides work, restoring soil, protecting , and sustaining livelihoods.

The question is no longer what is happening.

The question is: why are we still allowing it?

This reporting by Gardy Chacha of the Standard reinforces what and justice advocates have warned for years: plastic pollution is a public health crisis. From emissions at dumpsites to microplastics entering our food systems, the impacts are deeply human and deeply unequal.

As global negotiations on a plastics treaty continue to stall, the evidence is clear — addressing waste alone is not enough. Reducing plastic production must be central to any meaningful solution.
