Strengthening Climate-Informed Agriculture in Kajiado County

Farmers, county government representatives, agricultural officers, and climate experts are participating in a training workshop on Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture (PICSA) at Isinya Adult Education Center.

Organized by Kenya Climate Change Working Group, the training focuses on equipping farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to integrate climate information into agricultural decision-making.

Participants are engaging in sessions on:

• Understanding the PICSA methodology
• Mapping local community resources
• Developing seasonal agricultural calendars
• Examining climate variability and change
• Interpreting historical climate information for farm planning

These participatory sessions encourage knowledge exchange and practical learning, strengthening farmers’ ability to respond to climate variability and build resilient livelihoods.

Climate Change e as a Threat Multiplier: Strengthening Conflict Prevention & Climate Adaptation

During our Thursday Webinar Series, we explored how climate change is intensifying existing social, economic, and political vulnerabilities — especially in fragile and conflict-prone regions such as Kajiado and Isiolo.

Panelists highlighted that:

Drought, floods, and resource scarcity are increasing tensions over land, water, and pasture.
Climate-induced displacement is placing additional pressure on already vulnerable communities.
Civil society organizations play a critical role in linking climate adaptation with peacebuilding efforts.
Youth voices from Kajiado and Isiolo are driving community-led resilience, climate services awareness, and circular economy solutions.

The discussion strengthened understanding of the climate–conflict nexus and identified practical opportunities for collaboration between climate actors and peace and security practitioners.

Call to Action:
We must integrate climate adaptation into conflict prevention strategies, institutionalize youth participation in climate–security governance, and strengthen partnerships across sectors.

Climate action and peacebuilding must go hand in hand.

Day 3 – Matasia, Kajiado North

Dissemination in Matasia brought to light an important reality: climate information in peri-urban areas must speak to both agricultural livelihoods and emerging urban vulnerabilities.

As settlement expands and land continues to fragment, communities are navigating a complex transition from purely pastoral and agricultural systems to mixed peri-urban economies. Climate services must evolve accordingly.

Our discussions focused on:

• The importance of short-cycle crop varieties in response to shifting rainfall patterns
• Increased flood risk in low-lying areas due to intense, short-duration rainfall
• The urgent need for urban drainage preparedness as infrastructure struggles to keep up with growth
• Strengthening household water conservation practices amid rising demand and declining recharge

What stood out clearly is this: peri-urban communities sit at the frontline of climate variability. They experience the pressures of rural climate shocks while simultaneously facing unplanned urban expansion, inadequate drainage systems and rising water costs.

Climate advisories must therefore integrate:
• Agricultural adaptation
• Water security planning
• Urban resilience measures
• Land-use awareness

Resilience in Matasia will depend on coordinated action between households, local leadership, county government and civil society actors.

As KCCWG continues supporting climate information dissemination, our focus remains clear translating seasonal forecasts into practical, locally relevant decisions that protect livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.

Day 1 – Enkusero ✔️
The conversation today centered around livestock and pasture.
Many pastoralists wanted clarity on:
1. When pasture regeneration is expected
2. Whether water sources will recharge
3. Possible livestock disease outbreaks
These discussions matter because one delayed decision can affect an entire season.

Tomorrow: Olmoleliani (Maparasha).
