What if restoration could also power manufacturing, skills training, and sustainable livelihoods?

That was the focus of the “Exploring a Community-Led Bamboo Bioeconomy” CLFE Dialogue & Site Visit, hosted by Wanjira Mathai of World Recourses Institute.

The discussions explored the entire bamboo journey, from selecting the right species and treatment methods to manufacturing, financing, and building community-led enterprises. Visits to Funkidz Furniture and ToolKit Skills Training Facility showed how bamboo can create real economic opportunities while supporting a greener future.

The dialogue brought together leaders from government, research institutions, the private sector, and restoration organizations, including H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Selly Kimosop Environment Secretary at Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr Sigu Gordon principal scientist at KEFRI, Dr Nelly Oduor Principal Research Scientist Expertise : Bamboo utilisation at KEFRI, our C.EO & founder Victor Mwanga and Flora Awiro CEO & Founder Bamboosa Green Living.

Restoration doesn't end when a tree is planted. It grows into livelihoods, businesses, and stronger communities.

Following the official opening of the Nyinyira Bridge, we were honoured to host Deputy Head of Public Service Mr. Amos Gathecha, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, Hamisi MP Hon. Charles Gimose, Aldai MP Hon. Marianne Jebet Kitany, and other distinguished leaders at our BEEyond Trees Centre in Shamakhokho.

The visit showcased how restoration can extend beyond forests through sustainable community enterprises. From bamboo products to beekeeping and other nature-based businesses, BEEyond Trees demonstrates how healthy ecosystems can create lasting economic opportunities for the communities that help restore them.

At EarthLungs, we believe that successful restoration is measured not only by the number of trees planted, but also by the number of lives transformed.

Because when communities thrive, forests thrive too.

Restoring forests takes more than planting trees, it also takes the infrastructure that makes restoration possible.

Last week, we were honoured to welcome Deputy Head of Public Service Mr. Amos Gathecha, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, Hamisi MP Hon. Charles Gimose, Aldai MP Hon. Marianne Jebet Kitany, Secretary for Forest Development Mr. George Tarus, Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, and other distinguished leaders for the official opening of the Nyinyira Bridge at the Kaptumek/Kajulu (Old Bonjoge) Forest Block.

Constructed by EarthLungs, the bridge will improve access to restoration sites, support nursery and field operations, and strengthen conservation efforts across the landscape.

The visit also highlighted the progress of our partnership with the Government of Kenya, through which EarthLungs has restored large sections of the Kaptumek/Kajulu Forest Block by planting 1.97 million trees since April 2023, contributing to the national Programme.

We remain committed to restoring ecosystems, strengthening communities, and building the partnerships that make lasting impact possible.
