Buildher is a nonprofit social enterprise and workforce development partner transforming Kenya’s construction industry by training low-income women and supporting them to launch successful careers in the construction finishes trades. Our 12-month program combines technical training, wellness, professional development, job placement, and career access support—equipping women with the skills, tools,

and networks needed to access dignified, sustainable work. To date, we’ve trained over 700 women, with 80% securing income-generating roles. We provide a reliable pipeline of certified, work-ready tradeswomen and operate an alumnae-led furniture business that produces high-quality, custom residential and commercial pieces. We also link clients and employers to certified fundis for painting, tiling, and carpentry & joinery services. We welcome partnerships with organizations seeking skilled labor solutions, social impact collaboration, or durable, well-crafted furniture and finishes for homes, offices, and development projects.

Meet Lynne Cox, a Buildher friend and champion.

Long before signing up for an 85km ultramarathon, Lynne spent time with Buildher in Kenya while working as an architect. She visited our training spaces, met women on construction sites, and filled her notebook with sketches of women at work.

One message stayed with her:

“I am powerful enough to change my life.”

She carried those words home.

Now, she's carrying them through 85 kilometres in Scotland to raise funds for Buildher.

What’s in a cabinetmaker’s toolbox?

This week, we appreciate the tools behind Cabinetry trade.

Our trainee will take us through the tools they work with, from measuring and cutting to joining and installation.

A deep understanding of the tools of the trade is an essential foundation for any technical skill. For any fundi, knowing which tool to use, how to use it, and how to use it well and safely, directly influences the quality of your work and, ultimately, the value they deliver on site.

Episode 2 of Tuesday Tools & Trade | Tiling

This week, we are introducing you to tools in tiling.

Why do the tools matter?

A good tiling job depends on more than laying tiles. Measuring accurately, preparing the surface, getting the lines right, and knowing which tools to use at each stage all affect the final finish.

Our trainees are exposed to the tools of the trade as a critical part of their learning. We will take you through the tools needed for tiling and how they are used on the job.

Let us take you through a little Buildher rewind moment. Our version of throwback Thursday

When BitterSweet Monthly featured our story and at the heart of the story, they captured Melvine Khanali and Teresia Njeri, remarkable journeys.

Since 2018, we have been witnessing the journeys of more than 1,200 women who have walked through the Buildher doors. Each woman arrived with her own ambitions, challenges, and potential. Each has taken a different path, but they all share one thing in common: the decision to pursue a career in construction.

Melvine's journey into Painting & Decorating and Teresia's path in Carpentry remind us that careers are built one opportunity at a time. Their stories are powerful and a reflection of what becomes possible when women have access to quality training, practical experience, and meaningful opportunities.

For every story that is published, there are hundreds more unfolding on construction sites, in workshops, and across communities every day.
