Great meeting held with Emma Ochieng and Paul Ondumbe from U-Tena a community-based organization in Mukuru that has been using art and magnet theatre to address issues affecting young people and communities since 2006.

Through their programmes, U-Tena has reached 300+ students focusing on mental health, SRHR, HIV, education and livelihoods.

Our discussions explored a potential partnership under the M.A.T.H Project with opportunities to strengthen work around child protection, education for sustainable development, youth participation and wellbeing.

Today, AFOSI participated in the M.A.T.H Project radio talk show, engaging in a meaningful discussion on the connection between child protection and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The discussion explored how safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments can protect children while equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values needed to become active contributors to sustainable development.

With support from Barnfonden and Sweden.se the M.A.T.H Project continues to promote approaches that place children at the centre of efforts to build safer learning environments and a more sustainable future. Protecting children today is an investment in the sustainable leaders of tomorrow.

Through the Youth Voices in Budget Accountability radio talk show under the Sheria ya Vijana Project we opened up an important conversation on how young people can understand, participate in and influence budget accountability processes.

The discussion explored how youth welfare funds work and why tracking them is important, helping young people understand that accountability does not end when funds are allocated it also involves following how resources are used and whether they reach the intended beneficiaries.

We also looked at the role of AI-powered accountability tools in promoting transparency, giving young people new ways to understand fund allocation and engage with information.

With Barnfonden European Union in Kenya Organization of African Youth-Kenya Stretchers Youth Organization WeWorld Kenya Climate Innovation Center Sweden.se, we highlighted the importance of youth-led social accountability and the need to create constructive feedback loops between young people, communities and decision-makers.

The conversation further explored how young people can:

📌 Identify county-level budget priorities based on the challenges facing their communities.

📌 Use community complaints, surveys and other data to develop evidence-based advocacy proposals.

📌 Recognize corruption risks and understand safe channels for reporting concerns.

📌 Engage in responsible whistleblowing while prioritizing safety and respectful accountability.

The message is clear: young people do not have to wait to be invited into accountability conversations. They can ask questions, gather evidence, engage decision-makers and advocate for resources that respond to real community needs.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate young people from different contexts who share a common aspiration: a future where everyone can live with dignity, access better health and have a voice in shaping their future.

From Mathare to Kibera, young women living with HIV and young women with disabilities are speaking up for health, dignity, inclusion and opportunity.

Through AFOSI’s Unheard to Influential Project, we are amplifying their voices and creating spaces for young women to advocate for their rights and influence decisions that affect their lives.

In partnership with European Commission African Union AU-EU Youth Voices Lab - Power of the Collective ComDev Africa Youthmakers Hub and Restless Development Uganda we are working together to ensure that voices too often unheard are given the space to be seen, heard and valued.

Today marked the final day of the Youth Leadership, Public Speaking & Advocacy Skills Training under the Mazingira, Afya, Tumaini na HAKI Yetu (M.A.T.H.) Project funded by Sweden.se in partnership with Barnfonden where young leaders sharpened their communication and advocacy skills to drive meaningful change.

Building on the knowledge gained over the previous two days, participants deepened their understanding of how to strategically engage decision-makers by exploring ethical approaches to relationship-building and effective communication. They also learned how to develop a compelling advocacy ask using the Three E's Framework; Evidence, Emotion and Example ensuring their messages are clear, persuasive and action-oriented.

Through practical exercises, participants created personalized 5-Point Message Boxes, refined their advocacy messages through peer review and constructive feedback, and strengthened their ability to communicate with purpose and confidence. The training concluded with a post-training evaluation, reflections on the three-day learning journey and celebrating a new generation of young leaders equipped to influence policy and champion positive change.

On Day 2 of the Youth Leadership, Public Speaking & Advocacy Skills Training under the Mazingira, Afya, Tumaini na Haki yetu (M.A.T.H.) Project funded by Sweden.se in partnership with Barnfonden participants focused on strengthening the practical skills needed to influence decisions and drive positive change within their communities.

The day began with reflections on previous advocacy initiatives before introducing participants to the foundations of advocacy and its importance in advancing youth priorities and climate justice. Discussions encouraged participants to understand the advocacy landscape, identify opportunities for change and define clear, SMART advocacy objectives.

Participants also explored consensus building and alliance development, recognizing that sustainable change requires collaboration between communities, organizations and decision-makers. Through practical exercises, they learned how to identify strategic partners, build meaningful coalitions and develop advocacy plans that can influence policy and community development.

The training concluded with a session on in persona mapping, a practical approach to understanding decision-makers, their interests and the most effective ways to engage them in advocacy efforts. This session reinforced the importance of strategic communication and relationship-building in achieving advocacy goals.

Empowering Young Leaders to Shape Sustainable Communities.

Today marks the official start of the Mazingira, Afya, Tumaini na Haki Yetu (M.A.T.H.) Project funded by Sweden.se in partnership with Barnfonden Youth Leadership, Public Speaking & Advocacy Skills Training at the National Climate Change Resource Centre in Nairobi.

This transformative program brings together passionate young people eager to strengthen their leadership capacity, sharpen their public speaking skills, and become active agents of change in their communities.

Throughout Day 1, participants are diving into:
✅ Exploring diverse leadership styles and values that inspire positive change.
✅ Building self-confidence and setting meaningful personal development goals.
✅ Practicing teamwork and collaborative decision-making.
✅ Understanding youth participation in governance and policy processes.
✅ Learning community mobilization and civic responsibility.
✅ Designing community action plans that address real local challenges.

Through interactive discussions, self-reflection, group activities and practical exercises, these young leaders are gaining the mindset, confidence and practical skills needed to influence decision-making, advocate for their communities and champion sustainable development.
