They Don’t Just Nurse. They Build Nations.

This International Nurses Week, CMMB Kenya honors the quiet heroes behind our health system, nurses who wake before sunrise, hold hands in the darkest hours, and refuse to give up on a single life.

From rural health facilities in Kitui to busy hospitals in Nairobi, we have seen nurses do more than treat illness. They counsel frightened mothers. They help trace missing TB patients. They support cancer survivors through treatment. They are the heartbeat of Kenya's healthcare.

Across 13 counties, CMMB works alongside these frontline champions, strengthening maternal and newborn care, expanding HIV, TB, and cancer services, and ensuring health workers have the tools they need to save lives.

Our promise remains:
We invest in nurses through capacity-building training, enhancing clinical skills, leadership, and compassionate care. We protect their well-being and empower their voices.

Because when nurses thrive, communities survive.

Theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

This week don't just thank them—stand with them.

Advocate. Invest. Partner with us to empower nurses and strengthen healthcare systems.

For over a decade, Elizabeth Masua was the eyes and guide for her four children who lived with congenital cataracts. She carried the weight of poverty and silence, watching her children miss out on the simple joys of a childhood they couldn't see.
But this year, everything changed.
Thanks to our Sustainable Livelihoods Project and the incredible support from the Kwale Eye Centre and Fred Hollows Foundation, those bandages were removed, and Elizabeth’s children saw the world for the first time. The cycle of dependency has been broken, and for the first time, this family is looking forward to a future full of possibility.
Read the beautiful story of resilience, medical intervention, and restored hope below. 👇

After years of blindness, Elizabeth Masua’s four children regained their sight through cataract surgery supported by CMMB Kenya and Kwale Eye Centre. Read their inspiring journey from darkness to hope."

Improving eye health access in rural Kenya: a partnership that’s changing lives.

Through a strategic partnership with ALCON Foundation, CMMB Kenya launched a holistic eye care initiative in Kitui County to break down the barriers that remote communities face in accessing vision care.

The results in FY25 speak for themselves:
🔹 1.3M+ people reached with life-changing eye health information via local radio
🔹 235 healthcare workers trained across 16 facilities in eye disease detection and management
🔹 2,677 individuals diagnosed and treated for vision impairment or blindness
🔹 146 cataract surgeries performed
🔹 The cataract surgical rate for mature cases increased from 19% to 43%

From refractive errors to conjunctivitis to cataracts, this initiative delivered essential care where it was needed most. Proud to see how strategic collaboration and community-centred approaches can turn the tide on avoidable blindness.

At CMMB Kenya, we are committed to strengthening health systems and improving health outcomes for the communities we serve, especially the most vulnerable. We believe that lasting change begins with a strong, supported, and valued health workforce.

Health is not just a human right it is a powerful driver of economic growth and resilient communities. When people are healthy, they can work, provide for their families, and contribute to the economy. Health workers are at the heart of this equation, yet Kenya continues to face a critical shortage that threatens our collective progress.

As we mark World Health Worker Week, we call upon all stakeholders and particularly the government, to invest more in health. Kenya needs an estimated 114,000 more health workers by 2030 to close the growing gap. Without urgent investment in training, recruiting, fair compensation, and safe working conditions, we risk losing our most critical resource.

Investing in the health workforce isn't just a cost, it's the foundation for healthier, more capable populations. It is how we stop the strikes, stop the brain drain, and build a resilient health system that serves all Kenyans.

Join CMMB Kenya and the Frontline Health Workers Coalition in championing better health outcomes because Health Workers are VIPs.
