From Setback to Opportunity

What many people will see is a poultry project. What they won’t see is the journey behind it.

The youth of Kipsogon initially planned to venture into managu farming. But after weeks of searching for suitable land and facing the realities of a semi-arid climate, they had to rethink their plan.

Instead of giving up, they pivoted to commercial poultry farming.

On 20 July 2026, their new vision became a reality. The youth contributed the poultry house, equipment, and labour, while CorpsAfrica supported them with 160 improved Kienyeji chicks and feed, working together with Volunteer Mideva

Even better, the chicks were purchased from another young entrepreneur, showing how one youth-led business can create opportunities for another.

The plan is to sell the mature chickens, reinvest the profits, and eventually expand into a tent-and-chairs hire business.

This is more than a poultry project. It is a story of resilience, adaptability, and youth creating opportunities for youth.

Sometimes, the plan changes. The vision doesn’t.

"In Rwakinanga village, Tharaka Nithi County, the story of most young people begins the same way: no formal employment and no clear pathway to one. For the youth here, survival has meant piecing together whatever casual work the season allows.
During planting season, ploughing and harvesting bring in KSh 200 to 300 a day. Construction work and livestock grazing pay KSh 100 to 200 a day, and even these jobs are far from guaranteed. They are irregular and seasonal, leaving many young people unable to save, invest, and plan more than a day or two ahead. This is the economic reality that defines youth livelihoods in much of rural Tharaka Nithi.
What makes Rwakinanga's youth different is not the absence of hardship; it is their response to it. Rather than wait for opportunity to arrive, a group of young people came together to create their own: the Zawadi Self-Help Group.
Zawadi began as a table banking initiative of 25 youths where members pooled regular savings and issued loans to one another to support small income-generating activities. It is a simple model, but a powerful one as it turns unpredictable daily wages into a shared pool of capital that members can borrow against when they need it most, whether to expand a small business, cover an emergency, or invest in a new venture.
Table banking gave Zawadi members a foundation of trust and financial discipline, and with support from CorpsAfrica Kenya, the group has now taken a step further, launching a goat-keeping project designed to diversify and grow their income beyond casual labour.
For Zawadi, the goat project is not the destination; it is a stepping stone. Members have set their sights on using the income generated by the project to expand and diversify further, with plans to eventually purchase a honey processor, which would open a new income stream in honey production and processing.
There's a vision built in stages: save together, borrow together, invest together, and grow together, each success funding the next.

Two project launches in Baringo. Countless stories of impact. 💚

This week, we had the privilege of attending two inspiring project launches Volunteer Ally's posho mill project in Eldume Sokotei and Volunteer Mideva's dorper sheep farming project with Kipsogon CBO.

While both projects were exciting milestones, what touched us most wasn't just the launches themselves. It was seeing the ripple effect of the Volunteers' work in their communities.

At Ally's project, we met young people who are earning an income through vertical kitchen gardens. A simple idea has grown into an opportunity for youth to support themselves and their families.

At Mideva's project, we met a group of women confidently selling soap, yoghurt, baked goods, and other products after learning these skills from her. Their confidence, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit were a powerful reminder of what happens when communities are equipped with practical skills.

One moment that will stay with us was meeting Mideva's host mum, who proudly showed us a beautiful mat she had woven after learning the skill from Mideva. It was a simple yet powerful reminder that the impact of service extends far beyond a single community project. It reaches homes, families, and individuals in ways that are not always captured in reports or photographs.

These moments reminded us that true community development is not just about launching projects. It is about transferring skills, building confidence, creating opportunities, and empowering people to shape their own futures.

The projects were incredible, but the lives being transformed are the real success stories. Every field visit reminds us that the greatest impact is often found in the ripple effects that continue long after a project is launched. 🌱💚

✨ Volunteer Spotlight: Redefining Youth Engagement in Busia County

What happens when young people are given practical skills, a supportive environment, and the opportunity to lead?

For eight weeks, Purity worked alongside recent KCSE graduates in Busakadi Village, transforming a period often marked by waiting and uncertainty into one of learning, creativity, and action.

Through hands-on training in bead making, detergent production, and samosa preparation, these young people discovered more than just income-generating skills; they discovered their potential. Some participants began selling their products before the training even ended, turning ideas into income and confidence into action.

Their journey is a reminder that youth are not waiting to shape the future; they are already building it.
