Akiba Mashinani Trust had the opportunity to be part of the exhibitors at the AfricaXchange, convened by the Rockefeller Foundation - a platform that brings together leaders, innovators, and practitioners working to transform food systems across Africa.

At our booth, we shared our work on school meals, education access, and community-led research in Nairobi’s informal settlements, highlighting the critical link between food security and learning outcomes for children in underserved communities.

It was inspiring to engage with a diverse network of partners, practitioners, and changemakers, all committed to advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems. Our discussions underscored the realities facing informal schools, the importance of data and evidence in shaping policy and government action, and the role of innovation in addressing complex urban challenges.

Grateful for the connections made, the ideas exchanged, and the energy in the room.

Last week, we successfully held the 3rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Nakuru County Cooperative, presided over by the CEC for Cooperatives, Nakuru County.

The meeting marked an important moment of reflection and progress for the cooperative. In attendance was the AMT Chairlady, who officially handed over 3 land title deeds to the cooperative for a total land size of approximately 3.7 acres—strengthening the cooperative’s asset base and long-term sustainability.

The CEC also commended AMT for the impactful work they are doing in supporting other SACCOs and small savings groups to access government funding opportunities, including the Wezesha Fund. This initiative continues to empower grassroots financial groups and expand financial inclusion.

The cooperative further highlighted remarkable growth, increasing from KSh 19 million to KSh 40 million within just three years—a strong testament to effective leadership, member participation, and disciplined financial management.

A true demonstration of what organized community investment and cooperation can achieve.

As part of the Ngong River riparian restoration initiative here in Nairobi, community engagements across Tassia, Riverbank, and Savannah revealed a powerful and often overlooked perspective: the needs of children as key users of the river space.

Across all three areas, children spoke with one voice calling for clean water, safe places to play, and protection from pollution, waste, and flooding.

In Tassia, they highlighted the importance of child-friendly green and recreational spaces that nurture wellbeing and environmental awareness.

In Riverbank, they shared real-life experiences of unsafe conditions, pointing to the urgent need for better sanitation, waste management, and safer river edges.
In Savannah, their voices reminded us that even in formal urban settings, children need inclusive spaces to connect with nature and learn from their environment.

Restoring the Ngong River is more than an environmental effort it’s a commitment to building a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive future for the next generation.

Yesterday marked a significant milestone in our journey toward restoring the Ngong River.

We held a key consultation that officially kicked off the inclusion of formal settlements neighboring the Ngong River stretch in Upper Savannah. This moment represents a powerful shift acknowledging that the river’s impact goes beyond informal communities and touches the entire urban fabric.

By bringing formal setups into the conversation, we are strengthening a shared vision rooted in collective responsibility, collaboration, and inclusive solutions.

This is more than a meeting it’s a turning point toward a healthier river and a more united community.

Yesterday, we held a powerful community consultation bringing together residents from Kwa Otieno, Vumilia, Kamola, and Gotta City villages in Upper Savannah 🌍🤝

The engagement created a space for dialogue, listening, and sharing lived experiences as we continue breathing life back into the Ngong River stretch.

Community voices remain at the heart of this journey shaping solutions, strengthening ownership, and driving sustainable change for a cleaner, healthier environment.

Together, we are restoring not just a river, but dignity, resilience, and hope.

Voices from the Ground — Day 2

The final day of the Mathare Co-Researchers Writing Workshop in Naivasha focused on bringing everything together — from experiences shared to structured knowledge that can inform future community processes.

Building on Day 1, co-researchers worked in thematic groups:
🔹 Entry & Trust
🔹 Community Dynamics
🔹 Conflict & Negotiation
🔹 Power & Knowledge
🔹 Process Optimization & Efficacy

Within these groups, participants consolidated insights from across all 14 villages — identifying patterns, unpacking challenges, and reflecting on what worked, what didn’t, and what can be improved.

Each group then presented in plenary, creating a collective space to:

Share and connect insights across themes
Validate and refine key ideas
Ensure that all experiences were captured

What stood out was the clarity on both the realities of the process and the need to improve it:

👉 Community research is shaped not only by people and relationships, but also by how well the process is designed, communicated, and implemented.

This workshop was important because it:

Centers community voices in knowledge production
Turns research experiences into structured insights
Identifies gaps and opportunities to improve future processes
Strengthens more inclusive, effective, and community-rooted approaches

By the end of the day, insights across all themes had been brought together into a unified body of knowledge — forming the foundation for the final outputs of this process.

Voices from the Ground — Day 1 ✍🏾🌍

Today marked the beginning of our Mathare Co-Researchers Writing Workshop in Naivasha — bringing together community researchers from all 14 villages to do something powerful: turn research experiences into stories that matter.

After months of land research and village-level reflections, today was about:
🔹 Sharing real experiences from the ground
🔹 Connecting stories across different villages
🔹 Identifying the moments that truly define the Mathare land journey

Through theme group discussions, co-researchers reflected on:
• Building trust during enumeration
• Navigating community dynamics
• Handling conflict and tension
• Understanding power and land realities

The energy in the room was honest, raw, and deeply insightful. From personal encounters to collective challenges, one thing stood out:

👉 These are not just data points — they reflect real experiences and realities on the ground.

This process is about community ownership of knowledge and storytelling, ensuring that Mathare residents shape their own narrative

We ended the day with a powerful gallery walk — sharing stories, reflecting together, and identifying the voices that will shape the final output.

Tomorrow, we write ✍🏾🔥

On Tuesday, 17th March, we met with parents and teachers from four informal schools in Mukuru kwa Njenga, where the AMT school feeding program is reaching 1,000 learners.
We shared insights from the pilot and more importantly, we listened.
To their experiences, their feedback, and their ideas on how to strengthen and grow the program.
We also reflected on how to collectively amplify the need for school meals for learners in informal schools - who make up the majority in Mukuru.
Because lasting solutions are built with communities, not for them.
