Through our Schools Programme, we are passionate about equipping young people with the knowledge and values they need to become responsible consumers and environmental stewards.

This year, we took that mission a step further with a four-part waste education series on Akili TV Kenya, reaching millions of young viewers across Kenya.

Because when we asked ourselves, “How do we make waste management and the circular economy simple, engaging and meaningful for children under 10?” the answer was clear: meet them where they are, in a format they love.

The four-part series introduces children to the fundamentals of responsible waste management, including:

What is waste?
Why is waste separation important?
What do the different bin colours mean?
How can simple everyday actions contribute to a circular economy?

Our ambition goes beyond teaching children which bin to use. We want to help them understand why separating waste at source matters, so that the next time they encounter colour-coded bins at a mall, school or public space, they know exactly what to do and why it matters. Education is where lasting behaviour change begins.

By introducing circular economy principles early, we are helping nurture a generation that sees waste not simply as something to discard, but as a resource with value and potential.

KEPRO successfully convened the 2nd EPR Validation Meeting, bringing together Nema Kenya and key stakeholders to continue discussions on the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and, importantly, to reach alignment on the incentivization model for Waste Management Operators (WMOs).

The meeting provided an important platform for stakeholders to share perspectives, address outstanding issues, and work towards a model that supports transparency, fairness, accountability, and effective participation of waste actors across the value chain.

Reaching alignment on the incentivization model marks a significant step forward in strengthening collaboration between producers, the regulator, PROs, and waste management actors, while supporting a more effective and sustainable EPR system in Kenya.

Meaningful dialogue. Shared understanding. Collective action. A stronger foundation for Kenya’s circular economy.

From Awareness to Action: The Innovation Journey Continues!

KEPRO was at St Paul's University for the 4th Awareness Session, bringing students and innovators into the conversation around packaging waste, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and the opportunities within Kenya’s growing circular economy.

The session provided a platform to unpack the challenges facing packaging waste management while exploring the opportunities for innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and collaboration to create practical solutions.

But awareness is only the beginning.

We challenged the next generation of innovators to move from identifying problems to creating solutions and officially opened the call for the KEPRO Innovation Challenge!

Turning Events into Circular Economy Opportunities

The growing success of zero-waste events in Kenya continues to demonstrate what is possible when collaboration meets intentional action.

KEPRO was proud to serve as the Sustainability Partner at the 11th edition of the Nairobi Street Food Festival, championing waste segregation at source, responsible waste management and public awareness.

A key highlight was the distribution of compost manure made from organic waste collected during the previous festival a practical demonstration of closing the loop and turning waste into a valuable resource.

We also distributed recyclable water bottles and engaged attendees on the importance of waste segregation through three clearly identified bins:

Blue – Recyclable waste, Green – Organic waste, Black – General waste

The bins were strategically placed throughout the festival grounds, making segregation accessible and helping demonstrate to the public how simple, intentional actions can support responsible waste management.

Beyond awareness, waste generated during the festival was sorted and channeled to recyclers, reinforcing practical pathways for resource recovery and keeping valuable materials in circulation.

Together, let’s segregate, recover, reuse, and keep resources in circulation.
