Since 2024, the KEPRO Circular Economy Accelerator Programme has been equipping circular economy entrepreneurs with the skills, networks, and strategic support needed to build resilient, investment-ready businesses.

As KEPRO's flagship entrepreneurship initiative, the programme has supported over 40 small and medium-sized enterprises through tailored business advisory services, capacity-building sessions, mentorship, and market linkages. Designed as an intensive six-month journey, the programme focuses on helping businesses strengthen their operations, refine their business models, and improve their readiness to access finance and growth opportunities.

This year, we are proud to celebrate 19 innovative enterprises that successfully completed the programme and advanced to the investor pitching stage. Representing diverse sectors including recycling, upcycling, organic waste valorisation, and sustainable product development, these entrepreneurs are demonstrating how circular economy solutions can transform waste into economic opportunity, create green jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Their innovations embody the principles of circularity by keeping materials in use, reducing environmental impact, and unlocking value from resources that would otherwise be discarded.

As we reflect on another successful cohort, we celebrate the determination, creativity, and resilience of these entrepreneurs.

Their journey is proof that with the right support ecosystem, circular economy businesses can thrive and become powerful drivers of environmental and socio-economic change.

FROM IDEAS TO INVESTMENT: WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A SCALABLE CIRCULAR BUSINESS?

KEPRO was proud to host the 3rd Circular Economy Accelerator Program Pitch & Innovation Showcase, bringing together circular businesses that have completed an intensive 6-month journey of business advisory, capacity building and investor readiness.

A key highlight was the thought-provoking panel discussion, “What Investors Look for in Early-Stage Circular Businesses,” moderated by Nelly Gatonye, KEPRO, alongside Bethuel Kiragu (KUA Ventures), Erik Thomas (Confederation of Danish Industry), Susan Magu (Circular Innovation Hub), and Penny Njoki (Raisin Capital).

The conversation highlighted six important lessons for circular economy founders:
✅ Circularity creates value Transform resource challenges into viable and reliable revenue streams.
✅ Traction matters Impact is important, but customers, strong unit economics and sound financial records demonstrate business viability.
✅ Know your numbers and your investor Understand your cash flow and engage investors whose focus aligns with your business stage and needs.
✅ Build systems, not dependencies Sustainable growth requires strong teams, processes and governance beyond the founder.
✅ Profit sustains impact A strong environmental mission defines your purpose, while commercial performance supports long-term sustainability.

𝗞𝗘𝗣𝗥𝗢 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

KEPRO recently spent three impactful days in Taita Taveta County, engaging county leadership, officials, recyclers, aggregators, and waste pickers to strengthen sustainable waste management and advance the circular economy.

Led by KEPRO CEO James Odongo, the team was received by H.E. Christine Saru Kilalo, Deputy Governor of Taita Taveta County, alongside Mwatate DCC Kennedy Lwenyi, setting the stage for meaningful collaboration on sustainable waste management and the implementation of the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022 and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

KEPRO went on to train county officials on the key provisions of the SWM Act and EPR, emphasising the importance of translating policy into practical action and strengthening collaboration between government and waste-sector stakeholders.

Our engagement with recyclers, aggregators, and waste pickers focused on turning waste into opportunity. Discussions centred on making the MRF fully functional, increasing waste offtake from the county, diversifying waste businesses, strengthening the business case for waste, and creating stronger market linkages across the value chain.

To further support waste actors on the ground, we also distributed 100 sets of PPES, reinforcing the importance of safer and more dignified working conditions in the waste sector.

And we are not done yet! This engagement is part of a continued journey towards stronger waste management systems, thriving waste businesses, improved working conditions, and a more inclusive circular economy in Taita Taveta County.
