RHINO is a documentary film following the work of rangers from Borana Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Loisaba Conservancy in rhino conservation.

The documentary showcases the realities of the ranger workforce in protecting rhinos in Northern Kenya, and the challenges they face in the line of duty in times of drought and insecurity from banditry. The film also commemorates the life of ranger Johnson Sururu who lost his life in a bandits raid while protecting his community.

Kenya’s rhino population has been on a steady rise. According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the rhino population increased by nearly 9% in a single year from 2,102 in 2024 to 2,282 in 2025, an increase of 180 rhinos. Kenya has also recorded 0 poaching incidents since 2025 marking significant progress.
This success is partly attributed to the partnership between KWS and conservancies in Laikipia.

During a panel discussion held after the screening, Ramson Kiloku, Lead Rhino Monitor at Borana conservancy mentioned that rangers are passionate about their work but require proper training and gear as well as insurance to keep them motivated.

Rhino is directed by Tom Martienssen and narrated by Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy.

Happy World Elephant Day

Today we celebrate Kenya’s gentle giants and everyone who gives them a future, from Tsavo, Samburu and Amboseli to landscapes across our country Kenya and Beyond.

We honour the rangers who protect them, communities that coexist with wildlife, scientists who guide conservation, and technology that strengthens protection. We celebrate the hope created by institutions like Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Reteti, the leadership of KWS, and the over 240 community conservancies & conservation partners working together.

From 16,000, 1989 census to 42,000 elephants as per 2025 census, proves a collective conservation success story. Protecting their future means protecting habitats, supporting communities and finding lasting solutions to the human–elephant conflict.

Together, we can keep Kenya’s giants roaming free for generations to come.

Today, we join the world in celebrating the women and men who stand on the frontlines of conservation.

This World Ranger Day, we are gathered in Oloolaimutia, Narok County, hosted by the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association, to honour the courage, sacrifice and commitment of Kenya's conservancy rangers under this year's theme, "Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet."

As we remember the rangers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, we also celebrate the more than 4,200 conservancy rangers across Kenya who continue to protect our wildlife, secure critical habitats, support communities and safeguard our shared natural heritage.

As the voice of conservancy rangers, the Association exists to unite, represent, strengthen and advance the welfare and professionalism of rangers across Kenya.

To every ranger: thank you for your service, resilience and dedication. Today, and every day, we stand with you.
