Quality childcare depends on well-supported caregivers.

Key recommendations include:
> Comprehensive training on child protection, safeguarding, and psychological first aid
> Skills development in inclusive care, including support for children with special needs
> Improved caregiver-to-child ratios to ensure adequate supervision and individual attention

Investing in caregivers is an investment in children’s safety, development, and wellbeing.

Recommendations: Strengthening childcare in informal settlements requires practical, system-level support.

County governments play a critical role by:
> Easing licensing and regulatory barriers
> Prioritizing early childhood care in county plans and budgets
> Partnering with community providers and NGOs
> Supporting sustainability without imposing unaffordable costs

Targeted support helps childcare centres remain safe, compliant, and responsive to the needs of vulnerable families.

Caregivers are at the heart of child care systems yet many are operating under immense strain.

Across the facilities visited, we observed:
> Extremely high caregiver-to-child ratios, with one or two caregivers responsible for 10 or more children
> Inconsistent or inadequate remuneration, often driven by parents’ financial constraints
> Caregivers forced to undercharge or work with minimal resources to keep centres operational

Supporting caregivers requires addressing both skills and the economic realities that shape the quality of care they can provide

During our visits to community childcare facilities, we observed significant gaps in the physical environments where young children spend most of their day.

Many spaces were:
> Undersized relative to the number of children enrolled
> Poorly ventilated, resulting in excessive heat
> Structurally dilapidated
> Painted in dull, unstimulating colours that do not support early childhood development
> Safe, well-designed, and stimulating environments are foundational to quality child care.

These observations reinforce the urgent need for investment in child-friendly infrastructure.

On 3rd October 2025, a joint visitation was conducted to five childcare centres three home-based and two institution-based in Dandora and Tassia, Nairobi.

The visits focused on centres providing care to children aged three months to five years and were undertaken in collaboration with Wakili wa Watoto Club (NCAJ), Nyota Care Innovation, Community Health Promoters, and Child Protection Officers.

These engagements are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen safe, quality, and responsive childcare at the community level.

Impact, for us, is found in everyday moments:
> Caregivers gaining confidence.
> Communities engaging in honest conversations about child care.
> Partnerships rooted in trust and shared responsibility.
