TUNZA, the Green Climate Fund and Government of Denmark funded project implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya, Agriterra and County Governments across the fourteen counties of the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB), has finalized the Environmental Social Management plan that will guide the implementation for the project lifespan.

The environmental and social baseline assessment identified key environmental challenges within the project area, including land degradation, declining soil fertility, biodiversity loss, degradation of watersheds, increasing climate variability and pressure on natural resources.

Social challenges include rural poverty, climate vulnerability, unequal access to productive resources, gender inequalities and the need to ensure the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples and other vulnerable and marginalized groups. These baseline conditions informed the environmental and social risk assessment and the design of project mitigation measures.

The assessment also identified significant opportunities to enhance environmental sustainability, climate resilience, agricultural productivity, food security and rural livelihoods through implementation of climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration measures.

🌱🍽️ Kenya is connecting the dots "From Seed to Plate" to build more resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.

The Africa Food Show 2026 opened in Nairobi with the Secretary to the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya, Mrs. Mercy Wanjau, EGH, joined by the FAO Representative in Kenya, Ms. Farayi Zimudzi, Dr. Patrick K. Ketiem, Director General of KALRO, Mr. Matteo Marchisio, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Country Director and Representative for Kenya, and H.E. Ruzaimi Mohamad, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Kenya, alongside other leaders from government, development partners, the private sector and academia.

The event highlights the importance of collaboration across the food value chain, from production and processing to marketing and consumption, to strengthen food security, create jobs and drive economic growth.

FAO Kenya participated in the Sub-Saharan Africa International Model United Nations , and engaged with a remarkable group of young leaders committed to making a difference in the world.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was represented by Othieno Joseph, who joined the event as a Guest Speaker and shared insights on the work of the , its mandate, and its efforts in and around the world to advance food security, improve nutrition, promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen climate resilience, and improve livelihoods.

A key highlight of the discussion was exploring how young people can find their place within the United Nations system and contribute meaningfully to addressing global challenges. From communications and technology to policy, research, agriculture, and innovation, there are countless opportunities for youth to drive positive change and shape a more sustainable future.

The session also underscored the importance of agrifood systems, which are at the heart of sustainable development. The next generation has a critical role to play in making agrifood systems more inclusive, resilient, efficient, and sustainable for all.

🌱 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) strengthens agrometeorological advisory services to support climate-smart agriculture in Kenya

As climate change continues to affect agricultural production, access to timely and reliable climate information is becoming increasingly important for farmers. Through the Green Climate Fund-funded , brought together 56 Trainers of Trainers from 14 counties to enhance their capacity to interpret climate forecasts and develop practical agricultural advisories.

The training, conducted in partnership with the Kenya Meteorological Department, CIAT and Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSNET), equipped agricultural, livestock and meteorological officers with skills to translate climate information into actionable advice that can help farmers make informed decisions on planting, crop and livestock management, water use, and risk reduction.

By strengthening collaboration between climate information providers and extension services, the initiative will improve the delivery of climate advisories to farming communities, helping build resilience and improve productivity in the face of increasing climate variability.

# FAO participated in a consultative meeting with representatives from Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute - KEVEVAPI, European Union in Kenya Delegation (EUD), IGAD, and the Directorate of Veterinary Services to discuss support for KEVEVAPI's readiness to participate in the forthcoming EU-funded Continental Peste des Petits Ruminants Control and Eradication Programme.

The discussions focused on identifying key areas of support to strengthen vaccine production capacity and enhance preparedness for the implementation of regional and continental efforts aimed at controlling and ultimately eradicating PPR.

Assessing Rangeland Use Change and Its Impact on Pastoral Livelihoods

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the County Department of Livestock Production under the European Union in Kenya funded Project, undertook a technical assessment of land use change and its impacts on pastoral livelihoods and ecological systems in Narok County.

Key outputs included:
✅ A technical assessment report on land use change
✅ Digital land use maps showing historical and current trends
✅ Land use projection maps to support future planning

The findings will inform sustainable rangeland management, guide the formulation of appropriate land sector policies, strengthen pastoral production systems, and contribute to building climate-resilient communities and ecosystems.

Advancing Agroecology for Resilient Food Systems in Bungoma County

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) joined the County Government of , the European Union in Kenya, and other partners to launch the Bungoma County Agroecology Strategy and witness the handover of KES 20 million in grants to 18 Service Providers (ASPs) and 8 ASP Hubs under the European Union in Kenya-funded Project.

The event was graced by H.E. Pst. Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany, reaffirming the County Government's commitment to sustainable agriculture and resilient agrifood systems.

The Strategy marks a significant milestone in Bungoma County's journey toward sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agricultural development.

Building on the achievements of the BOOST Project, the County plans to establish 45 Agroecology Service Provider Hubs to expand access to extension services, strengthen agribusinesses, create opportunities for youth, and accelerate the adoption of agroecological practices.

Through strong partnerships with the European Union in Kenya, the Government of Kenya, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) county governments, and local stakeholders, remains committed to supporting locally led solutions that improve livelihoods, enhance resilience to climate change, and transform agrifood systems for a more sustainable future.

, under the European Union in Kenya funded in collaboration with the Directorate of Veterinary Services at national and sub-national levels, conducted a workshop aimed at strengthening animal health service delivery systems through structured, documented, and scalable Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs).

The workshop brought together public and private animal health service providers to explore practical approaches for enhancing collaboration, improving access to quality animal health services, and building resilient veterinary systems that better serve livestock keepers and communities.

Through stronger partnerships, we can improve animal health, protect livelihoods, and contribute to sustainable livestock development.
