Kitchen gardens are proving that transformation does not always begin with vast acres of land. Sometimes, it starts with a small space, local materials, and the right knowledge and support.

These gardens are practical agroecological systems that support year-round food production and stronger household resilience.

Through the Wezesha III Agri-Eco Hub Project, young people are not only taught about kitchen gardens, but they also actively design them, build them, nurture them, and witness the transformation from bare ground to thriving sources of food and opportunity.

This hands-on experience gives them practical, replicable skills for home food production and income generation.

The project cultivates a generation that sees agriculture as a path to opportunity, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

Poultry farming offers young Kenyans a practical pathway to improve livelihoods and strengthen food security through enterprise, resilience, and income generation.

However, success in farming requires the right skills, knowledge, and guidance to manage it as a and overcome challenges in the sector.

In Busia County, the project is bridging this gap.

Through hands-on training and mentorship at the Wezesha Agri Eco-Hub, youth are gaining practical skills in poultry farming while learning how to manage it as a profitable and sustainable business, focusing on:
• Proper vaccination practices and administration
• Poultry vaccination schedules for disease prevention
• Effective feeding systems for productivity
• Environmental protection to reduce disease risks
• Modern poultry management techniques for improved performance

This initiative is a partnership between Safaricom Foundation, Lake Basin Development Authority, and USTADI Foundation.

Stronger coastal livelihoods start with skills, knowledge, and collaboration.

Ustadi Foundation hosted the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association - AFRACA, led by Secretary General Ms. Ngo Bakang Anny Caroll for the signing of a partnership agreement aimed at Strengthening the capacity and profitability of small-scale fisher communities in Kwale and Lamu counties through technical assistance, sustainable approaches, and strategic partnerships.

This partnership advances stronger, more resilient coastal livelihoods through skills, knowledge, and sustainable economic growth, while aligning with a shared commitment to demand-driven capacity development and market-led approaches that improve rural incomes.

We look forward to effective collaboration and impactful implementation.

What was once widely seen as a fallback option, or a path reserved for those unable to access white-collar jobs, is increasingly being redefined as a space for opportunity, innovation, and enterprise.

In Busia County, the Wezesha III project is driving a powerful mindset shift among 3000+ young people.

Through the project’s training, agribusiness mindset development, and hands-on exposure, youth now view agriculture as a viable career path.

Youth are also approaching farming as a business, focused on planning, production, marketing, and profitability.

This shift is building confidence in agriculture as a pathway to self-employment, income generation, and long-term wealth creation.

Youth have now learnt to: start small and scale steadily, treat farming as a business, focus on high-value crops, understand market demand early, and invest in continuous learning and modern agricultural practices.

Investing in a sustainable future means investing in people and resources that will ensure the progression of dynamic agricultural value chains.

It means investing in young people by preparing them to be innovative and resilient, and investing in the skills that will enable them to lead their communities.

Starting small builds strong foundations.
And strong foundations enable steady growth.

Youth are drivers of change in the agri-food system.
The Wezesha III project, funded by Safaricom Foundation, is championing this path. Supporting local, youth-driven solutions.

For Kennedy Okoba, a youth champion in the Wezesha III project from Bunyala Central ward, environmental sustainability is not just a project pillar.
It is a daily practice that starts with keeping his community clean.

After receiving training in kitchen garden technologies at the Wezesha Agri Eco-Hub in Alupe, and soft skills training in Bunyala, Busia County, Kennedy chose to act.
He brought the lessons home.

He collected sacks, bottles, and old containers that others had thrown away.
Instead of letting this waste pollute the environment, he turned it into vessels for growing food.

Today, Kennedy’s home is a living example of practical sustainability.

By repurposing waste to grow vegetables:
He is cleaning the environment by removing plastic waste.
He is feeding his family with fresh vegetables.
He is earning income by selling surplus produce and reinvesting in his farm.

Kennedy is now a role model. Young people visit his home to learn from him.

With support from the Safaricom Foundation, the Wezesha III Project—implemented by Ustadi Foundation in collaboration with Lake Basin Development Authority—is strengthening community systems, empowering youth, and promoting sustainable agriculture as a driver of development.

Hands-on training is key to transforming food systems.

It builds real capacity and empowers people to apply knowledge in practical ways.

By focusing on practical skills, youth are better prepared to drive agricultural growth and lead innovation in food systems.

This week, under the Wezesha III Agri-Eco Hub Project,
young people are learning how to design and create diverse kitchen garden technologies.

This is a partnership between Safaricom Foundation, USTADI Foundation & Lake Basin Development Authority.

Think young people don’t want to work in agriculture? Think again!

Youth are discovering that agriculture is not just work, it’s creativity, innovation, and a path to sustainable opportunities.

Through the Wezesha III Agric Eco-Hub project in Busia County, youth are learning hands-on skills and discovering that agriculture is creative, rewarding, and full of opportunities.

Today’s focus at Wezesha Agri Eco-Hub: Mandala Gardens, a smart, sustainable way to grow more in less space!

✨ Benefits:
✅ Circular beds grow more plants in less space.
✅ Central keyholes give easy access without stepping on soil.
✅ Water spreads evenly from the center, reducing waste.
✅ Diverse plants together keep pests away and boost biodiversity.

Gender inequality in the blue economy is not just a social injustice; it is an economic setback.

Without access to financing, training, and market opportunities, many women are unable to invest in improved waste collection systems, recycling innovations, or value-added ventures that could transform coastal waste into viable economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.

Investing in women is one of the surest ways to create inclusive and sustainable blue economies.

BlueBiz Program, through Ustadi Foundation and TechnoServe in Mombasa County, is actively dismantling barriers that hold coastal women back by prioritizing the inclusion of women in waste management enterprises across coastal communities by empowering them with skills, opportunities, and pathways to build sustainable livelihoods.
