On January 28, 1896, Walter Arnold became the recipient of the world's first speeding ticket in East Peckham, Kent, England. He was fined 1 shilling for driving his Benz motorcar at 8 mph (13km/h) in a 2 mph zone, which was four times the legal limit. A police officer pursued him on a bicycle for five miles to issue the citation.
