Alphonce Shiundu, Kenya Country Director at Africa Check, reflects on democracy, accountability and the role of young people in shaping Africa’s future.

When asked what Africa could look like in 10 years, this is what Charles Onyango-Obbo had to say:

“In many countries, more women are enrolling in university than men. The rate at which this is happening in Africa is very dramatic. In 10 years, Africa will still be young, but I believe it will be female-led in terms of leadership.”

He shared these thoughts at the Naumann Academy of Politics, which has brought together participants from across the world to explore geopolitics and deepen understanding among today’s and tomorrow’s trendsetters.

As technology, AI and social media increasingly shape how we understand politics and elections, protecting information integrity has never been more important.

At the latest Freedom Café, FNF Kenya brought together journalists, political actors, civil society, government representatives, technology experts and content creators to explore the growing impact of misinformation, AI-generated content, deepfakes and social media algorithms on democracy and public trust.

The conversation also highlighted Africa’s role in shaping its own digital narrative and the shared responsibility we all have to verify information before we share, forward or amplify it.

As Kenya moves towards another election period, one message was clear: protecting information integrity is everyone’s responsibility.

The future of democracy depends on informed, principled, and prepared leaders.

Through political education and leadership training in Kenya's Coast Region, Friedrich Naumann Foundation Kenya brought together members of the Orange Democratic Movement ODM 🍊 Youth League to strengthen issue-based politics and democratic leadership ahead of the 2027 elections. The training focused on young members intending to vie for political seats.
