As we prepare for the rains, water conservation should be at the heart of how we prepare our farms and communities. Harvesting and storing rainwater, protecting water sources, and reducing wastage can help farmers secure water for the seasons ahead and build greater resilience.

Every Drop Counts | A Water Learning Series

We've all seen it. The rains come, water pours off the roof, floods the compound and disappears down the road. A few weeks later, we're walking long distances or paying for water again.

The rain was never the problem. The problem is letting it go.

Every household, school, church and farm already has a way to catch water: a roof, a slope, a patch of ground where runoff naturally collects. With a little planning, the rain we get today can carry us through the dry months ahead.

This season, before the rains arrive, take a walk around your home or farm. Where does the water run? Where could you catch it?

A GREENER FUTURE STARTS WITH SKILLED YOUTH.

Every year, thousands of young people finish school or college and start looking for work. Many of them are still looking years later. The problem isn't that they're not willing. Often, the skills they were taught don't match the work that's out there.

Meanwhile, some work is growing fast and needs hands. Farmers want someone who can fix a solar pump or set up drip irrigation. Communities need people who can turn waste into compost or briquettes.

But training alone isn't enough. Young people also need tools, someone to guide them, and a market for what they produce. That's the gap we are trying to bridge at FKLM Africa Foundation, because a skill only changes a life when it turns into an income.

What if the skills we need to protect our environment could also help people build better livelihoods?

That is where green skills come in.

From a young person learning how to install solar systems, to a farmer improving soil health, a community member learning how to restore a degraded landscape, or someone turning waste into something useful. These are all examples of green skills in action.

They are practical skills that help us respond to climate change, care for our natural resources and create opportunities at the same time. And as our communities face changing weather, pressure on land and water, and fewer livelihood opportunities, these skills are becoming increasingly important.

At FKLM Africa Foundation, we believe that restoring our environment should also create opportunities for the people who depend on it. By equipping communities with the right skills we give more people the ability to become part of the solution.

The rain brings more than water. It brings the promise of renewed fields, replenished water sources, healthier ecosystems and a fresh season of possibility. But capturing that opportunity requires preparation.

Sustainable water infrastructure helps communities harvest, store, and conserve rainwater. It ensures that what falls today can continue to support ecosystems long after the clouds have passed.

Preparing for the rains is therefore not simply about getting ready for a season. It is about building resilience for the seasons ahead. It strengthens livelihoods and creates communities that are better equipped to adapt to a changing climate.

The rains are coming, are you ready?

The short rains offer an opportunity to start strong, but what happens before the first rainfall matters just as much. Clear your fields, prepare planting lines, repair terraces and contour structures.

However, preparing the land is only half the job. The soil also needs protection. Avoid leaving large areas of soil bare and exposed to pounding rain and wind. Where possible, use crop residues, mulch and cover crops to shield the soil surface. Remember, the topsoil that washes away today is the fertility your farm needs tomorrow.
