COGRI–Nyumbani Welcomes His Eminence Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ

On 18th July 2026, COGRI–Nyumbani was honored to receive His Eminence Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, on a strategic visit that served as a profound affirmation of the institution's mission and enduring legacy of compassionate service.

The Cardinal was accompanied by a distinguished Vatican delegation comprising Fr. Dumisani Vilakati, Regional Coordinator for Kenya at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and Fr. Joseph Savarimuthu, Secretary to the Prefect. Also present were representatives of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar: Fr. Ismael Matambura, SJ, Director of AJAN, and Fr. Rampe Hlobo, SJ, Director of JEO. Members of the COGRI– Board in attendance included Fr. Elias Opondo, SJ, representing the Jesuit East African Province, alongside Ms. Eizabeth Wanjiku and Mr. Barlet Jaji.

The delegation was warmly received by Sr. Doris Ann Mulongo (SMK), General Manager of COGRI, together with the dedicated staff and the children of Nyumbani.

The visit began with a comprehensive presentation on COGRI operations, followed by a guided tour of Nyumbani Home and the Nyumbani Diagnostic Laboratory, providing the Cardinal and his delegation with firsthand insight into the institution's holistic approach to caring for vulnerable children and promoting community health.

A defining highlight of the visit was Cardinal Czerny's heartfelt reflection on his deep personal and spiritual connection with the late Fr. Angelo D'Agostino, SJ, the visionary founder of Nyumbani. He expressed great joy in witnessing the vitality of the programs that support and empower talented and vulnerable children, noting that Fr. D'Agostino's spirit and vision continue to inspire the organization's mission and remain a driving force behind its impact.

The visit concluded on a particularly joyful note as Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, celebrated his 80th birthday with the children of Nyumbani. Together, they marked the occasion by cutting a birthday cake and sharing moments of joy, laughter and fellowship. The heartwarming celebration beautifully complemented the day's strategic engagements, reflecting the Cardinal's humility, compassion and enduring love for children while showcasing the vibrant spirit of the Nyumbani family.

This memorable visit further strengthened the longstanding relationship between the Holy See and COGRI, while renewing a shared commitment to promoting the dignity, holistic care and empowerment of every child within the Nyumbani family. It was a powerful reminder that the legacy of service envisioned by Fr. Angelo D'Agostino continues to flourish through the dedication of the Board, management, staff, partners, and all those who walk alongside the children of Nyumbani.

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Nyumbani

1️⃣ We were one of the first orphanages in Kenya built specifically for children affected by HIV. In 1992, when most institutions turned children away, Nyumbani opened its doors.

2️⃣ Nyumbani is much more than a children's home. Children of God Relief Institute (COGRI) has operated four major programs: Nyumbani Children's Home, the Lea Toto Community Community Programme (now closed), Nyumbani Diagnostic Laboratory, and Nyumbani Village.

3️⃣ We care for 600 children across two programs, Nyumbani Children's Home and Nyumbani Village, all under one mission: holistic growth for every child, regardless of health status.

4️⃣ A whole village was built around family. Nyumbani Village in Kitui doesn't use a traditional orphanage model; children live in family homes led by grandparents, creating households where generations care for one another just like a family.

5️⃣ The mission has never changed. For over three decades, Nyumbani has remained committed to one purpose: quality, comprehensive care so children and families affected by HIV can live healthy, hopeful, dignified lives.

6️⃣ Creativity is celebrated here. Nyumbani was named Creative School of the Year at the 2024 and 2025 MASK Awards, recognising its commitment to nurturing artistic talent alongside academic success.
7️⃣ Education goes beyond primary school. Nyumbani supports children from early learning all the way to university and vocational training.

8️⃣ Sustainability is part of everyday life. Nyumbani grows food, keeps livestock, harvests rainwater, runs on solar power, plants indigenous forests, and supports income-generating activities to build a more self-sufficient future.

9️⃣ The children don't just survive; they thrive. Nyumbani has maintained a 98% HIV viral suppression rate, helping children living with HIV stay healthy and live full, active lives.

🔟 We have our own accredited diagnostic laboratory. Founded in 1998, Nyumbani Diagnostic Laboratory has grown into a leading medical lab serving hospitals, researchers, and individuals across Kenya, with ISO 15189 accreditation maintained since 2013.

Their visit is made possible through the strong partnership forged by Amigos de Nyumbani, our Spanish chapter. Over the coming weeks, they will be supporting various departments across Nyumbani Village, including sustainability, engineering, and social work.

Rooted in Mission, Renewed in Partnership

A delegation of twelve pilgrims from the Christian Life Community of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, S.J., USA, visited Nyumbani Children's Home on Tuesday, deepening a bond that traces back to the vision of our founder, Fr. Angelo D'Agostino, S.J.

Led by Fr. Terry Charlton, S.J., the group toured the home and engaged with the history of Nyumbani, from its founding in Nairobi to the establishment of Nyumbani Village in Kitui County. Fr. Charlton had previously hosted Fr. D'Agostino during a visit to the United States and brought his community to see firsthand the work that friendship helped shape.

The visit opened conversations around continued collaboration and partnership with Nyumbani's programmes, reaffirming the shared Jesuit values of service, dignity, and care for the most vulnerable.
