Open Mapping Hub - Eastern and Southern Africa

Open Mapping Hub - Eastern and Southern Africa The Open Mapping Hub - Eastern and Southern Africa is one of four regional hubs through which HOT supports and scales OpenStreetMap communities globally.

The Open Mapping Hub - Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) works with organizations and communities across 23 countries in creating and updating free, editable and shareable open map data in OpenStreetMap. Leveraging local expertise, the Hub facilitates localized mapping efforts tailored to regional priorities from disaster response and climate resilience to urban planning while serving as a vital connection between local communities, NGOs, governments, and international aid organizations.

The communities that need accurate maps the most are often the ones missing from them. Here's what we're doing about it together.

We are partnering with Shack Dwellers International Kenya (SDI Kenya) to train community youth and students across 33 informal settlements in Nairobi, building their capacity in open geospatial tools, drone imagery, and Earth observation technology so they can create maps that reflect local knowledge and inform decisions that affect their lives.
