To the mothers who endure the impossible and still show up every single day we celebrate you.

Through drought, hunger, displacement, conflict, floods, and even locust invasions, mothers in ASAL communities continue to hold families together with strength, courage, and endless love.

You are the quiet force behind resilient communities.
The hands that nurture.
The hearts that never give up.

Today, we honour your sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering hope.

Happy Mother’s Day from ASAL Humanitarian Network.

Every repeated assessment is time taken away from communities.

Due diligence passporting reduces duplication, builds trust, and allows local organizations to focus on delivering impact not paperwork.

Because efficiency isn’t just a system issue, it’s a community outcome.

From the frontlines of crisis to everyday community life, labour is what holds everything together. Today, we recognize and honour the people whose work sustains resilience and hope.

Risk is part of humanitarian work. But it’s not shared equally.

Too often, those closest to the crisis carry the most. Risk sharing changes that.

Shared responsibility. Fairer partnerships. Stronger impact.

We keep saying “localization”… but honestly, what does that look like?

For many local organizations, this is already their daily reality. They are the first to respond and the last to leave.

But being there is not the same as being heard.

Localization is about changing who decides, who is trusted, and who leads. Because too often, local actors do the work but don’t shape the direction.

When that shifts, everything else starts to change. The response makes more sense. It lasts longer. It reflects real lives, not assumptions.

Last week, the ASAL Humanitarian Network participated in the Practitioner Summer School on Rethinking Pastoral Development in the Face of Chronic Uncertainty in Isiolo.

Over five days, practitioners, researchers, and local actors came together to reflect on pastoral development through real experiences and shared learning. The sessions challenged common narratives, explored environmental change, and pushed for more responsive and inclusive approaches.

What stood out was the honesty in the room. Open conversations, shared journeys, and collective reflection reminded us that development is about people, trust, and lived realities.

These are the spaces that shape how we listen, design, and support locally led action across ASAL communities.

Grateful to be part of it and to carry these lessons forward.

Last week, we had the opportunity to take part in PBO Week at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, a vibrant space that brought together Public Benefit Organizations, government, and partners.

We were especially glad to have a booth to showcase the work of our network, connect with peers, and share more about locally-led humanitarian action in Kenya’s ASAL regions. Moments like these remind us how important it is to tell our stories and learn from each other.

A big thank you to Trócaire and the Charter4Change Kenya Working Group for making this possible and for creating space for meaningful dialogue and visibility.

Easter is a gentle reminder of renewal, hope, and the power of new beginnings. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and reconnect with our values, our purpose, and the people around us.
As we mark this season, may it inspire kindness in our actions, strength in our work, and optimism for the days ahead. Whether spent in quiet reflection or shared moments with others, Easter invites us to carry forward a renewed sense of purpose and possibility.

A mother in Isiolo doesn’t need a list of what she should have, she needs the power to decide what her family needs most. Today, that might be water. Tomorrow, school supplies. Next week, medicine.

And that’s where the shift is happening.

Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) now accounts for nearly 20% of global humanitarian aid, yet in places like Kenya’s ASAL regions where crises are constant, its real value goes beyond numbers. It restores something traditional aid often overlooks: choice, dignity, and control.

This week, humanitarian actors are in Isiolo for a CVA training convened by CALP Network in partnership with the ASAL Humanitarian Network turning Grand Bargain commitments into action, scaling cash, strengthening localization, and delivering aid that truly responds to people’s needs.

Because the future of humanitarian response isn’t just giving more, it’s giving better.

Water shouldn’t be this hard. Not a journey. Not a gamble. Not a daily weight carried under a burning sky.

But for many families across Kenya’s ASAL regions, it is.

This is what drought looks like up close miles walked on hope, empty containers that feel heavier with every step, and days shaped by the search for something most of us turn on without thinking.

Watch. And hold that reality for a moment.

Today, on World Water Day, let it remind us: access to water shouldn’t be a privilege, it’s a right worth protecting, for everyone.

Eid Mubarak to all who are celebrating!

As communities come together during this special time, we are reminded of the importance of compassion, generosity, and standing with one another.

Let this season inspire us all to share, care, and stand in solidarity with those in need.
