NICE - Need for Inclusive Children Education, Nairobi (2026)

On 6th May 2026, we marked the N.I.C.E project closing event at Shalom House, Nairobi, bringing together the people and partnerships that have shaped this journey over the past three years.

The event served as a moment to reflect on and share the milestones achieved through the project, the impact created in schools and communities and the many stories of resilience, inclusion and transformation that have shaped the N.I.C.E journey. Most importantly, it was an opportunity to celebrate the people who made the vision of inclusive education a reality.

The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education and the State Department of Children and Social Services, officials from partner organisations, school heads and teachers, caregivers, participants, community volunteers and project implementors from Amani, Koinonia Community, Cittadinanza and EducAid.

While the project reaches its conclusion, the relationships built, knowledge shared and commitment to inclusion will continue to inspire the work ahead. 💙✨

During the course of the economic empowerment trainings conducted at Paolo's Home Centre in Kibera and Dagoretti Sub-Counties in the month of March and April, the caregivers shared their business ideas and with this Cittadinanza ONLUS in collaboration with Koinonia Community and Paolo's Home center provided them with the income generating items to assist them to turn these ideas into businesses, helping them build sustainable livelihoods while they continue to provide care to their children with disabilities.

As the NICE project approaches its completion, this initiative is a step towards a long-term impact, our team will continue doing follow-ups to support and strengthen these businesses beyond the project implementation period.

Over the weekend Koinonia Community and Amani, in partnership with other like-minded organisations, came together at St. Teresas Girls High School in Eistleigh, Nairobi, Kenya to commemorate the International Day for Street Children, a day dedicated to amplifying the voices, dignity and rights of street-connected children.

This powerful gathering brought together street-connected children, families, local authorities and partners with one united message: you are seen, you are valued and you are not alone. Through shared moments of joy, dialogue and encouragement, the day created a safe space for connection, healing and renewed hope.

We were honored to host Esther PassarisNairobi Woman Repreresintative as our Guest of Honor, whose presence highlighted the importance of collaboration between communities, organisations and leadership in addressing the realities faced by children/families living and working on the streets.

The event also provided a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with children we have journeyed with over the years some of whom, due to various challenges, have found their way back to the streets. It was a moment to remind them that the door is always open, that support still exists and that their journey matters. At the same time, we were able to meet and engage with new children, continuing our mission of outreach, rescue and accompaniment.

For over 20 years, Koinonia Community and Amani have remained present in the streets walking alongside children with compassion, consistency and commitment. This day reaffirmed that presence, while also strengthening networks with fellow organisations dedicated to creating lasting change.

As the NICE Project approaches its conclusion, our work does not end. Through the continued partnership between Amani and Koinonia Community, our focus remains on long-term reintegration supporting children to return to families, schools and communities, while building systems that ensure sustainability and impact for years to come.

This is more than a one-day event it is a continuous journey of hope, restoration, and transformation."

A conclusione di tre anni di lavoro condiviso con scuole, famiglie e comunità di Nairobi per promuovere un’educazione più inclusiva, si terranno due eventi in Italia dedicati alla restituzione di questo importante percorso.

Gli incontri, a Rimini sabato 11 aprile e a Milano sabato 18 aprile, saranno l'occasione per ripercorrere, insieme ad Amani for Africa, Cittadinanza ONLUS ed EducAid, le tappe del progetto, condividere i risultati raggiunti e aprire uno sguardo sulle prospettive future, anche grazie al video-documentario realizzato da Francesco Cavalli e Alessandro Rocca.

Il percorso di restituzione però non si fermerà in Italia: mercoledì 6 maggio l’appuntamento si sposterà a Nairobi, per condividere i risultati anche con la comunità locale che ne è stata protagonista.

Concluding three years of shared work with schools, families and communities in Nairobi to promote more inclusive education, two events will take place in Italy dedicated to the return of this important path: in Rimini on Saturday 11 April and in Milan on Saturday 18 April.

The meetings will be an opportunity to review the work done, share the results achieved, and present future prospects. The video documentary by Francesco Cavalli and Alessandro Rocca will also be screened during the meeting.

However, the process of restitution will not stop in Italy: on Wednesday, May 6th, the event will take place in Nairobi, to share the results with the local community that was involved.

Yesterday, under the first result of the NICE - Need for Inclusive Children Education (AID 012590/06/3) Project, Koinonia Community and Amani for Africa, conducted a Community Volunteers (CVs) Workshop themed “𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐊𝐎𝐁𝐎 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.”

The workshop started with field updates from the Community Volunteers, where they shared key successes, challenges encountered, lessons learned and best practices in promoting community child protection. These discussions provided valuable insights into on-the-ground realities and informed the day’s learning sessions.

Thereafter, the volunteers were taken through a comprehensive and practical session on the KOBO Toolbox, an intuitive and reliable digital tool used for data collection, analysis and management in monitoring, evaluation and research. The training was facilitated by Mr. Dennis Mugendi, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, who emphasized accurate data collection and reporting.

The day concluded with the volunteers consolidating their knowledge of the KOBO Toolkit, reaffirming both their commitment to their work and Koinonia Community and Amani For Africa's continued support to their vital role within the community.

On 2nd December, Paolo's Home Home and Cittadinanza ONLUS, together with other like-minded civil society organisations working in Kibera (EducAid, SHOFCO, The Action Foundation, NIVISHE, ANDY, Little Rock) among others, hosted a celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) at the Paolo’s Home Kibera grounds.

The day began with a special edition of Sauti za Ujumuishaji radio shows across our three partner radio stations (Mtaani Radio, Radio Domus, Pamoja FM Radio. The Voice of Kibra. and also a special appearance at Radio Citizen, highlighting the significance of the day and the need to build societies where persons with disabilities are fully included. This was followed by a procession walk through Kibera, with strategic awareness stops focusing on disability rights, inclusion and this year’s theme of: “𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬.”

Back at the PH grounds, the community enjoyed band performances and speeches from persons with disabilities, a Community Health Promoter and a caregiver to a child with a disability, as they shared insights on available support services within Kibra and Nairobi County. Our keynote speaker, Madam Susan Nafula, Legal Officer at the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), underscored the importance of inclusive communities and encouraged persons with disabilities to register with the council to access essential services and opportunities.

This event formed part of the Need for Inclusive Children Education (NICE) Project – (AID 012590/06/3), funded by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi and supporting a collaboration between Paolo’s Home and Cittadinanza Onlus in the second result of the project ensuring the right to access education to children with disabilities in Kibra, Dagoretti and Kajiado North Sub-Counties over the past three years.

Koinonia Community, Paolo’s Home Centre in partnership with Cittadinanza ONLUS, recently hosted a residential caregivers’ retreat workshop in Machakos County, held over two weeks, 11th–13th and 18th–20th November 2025. Caregivers from our three operational regions of Kibra, Dagoretti and Kajiado North Sub-Counties came together for a well-deserved break from their daily responsibilities.

The retreat provided a safe and refreshing space for the caregivers to connect, share personal experiences, unwind from the emotional and physical demands of supporting children with disabilities and learn from one another. Both caregivers and their children enjoyed a rich mix of activities, including debriefing sessions, swimming, children’s play arcade music and dance lessons moments that strengthened bonds and renewed spirits.

This workshop is part of the NICE – Need for Inclusive Children Education (AID 012590/06/3) project, funded by the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi reaffirming our commitment to holistic support and inclusivity for families raising children with disabilities.

A a glimpse into the NICE (Need For Inclusive Education) Project - AID 012590/06/3, which is funded by the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi and led by Amani for Africa. Since 2023, this initiative has been working hand in hand with communities to create real change in the lives of children through three main areas of focus.

Through Koinonia Community, the project has supported street-connected children and their families, helping them find stability, care and pathways back to community life. Cittadinanza ONLUS has opened doors for children with disabilities, ensuring their right to education and empowering them to learn in environments that recognize their potential and through EducAid, the project is making schools more inclusive, reaching 10 institutions where diversity is embraced and every child feels they belong.

These milestones are more than achievements, they represent hope, dignity and opportunity. Watch the video and see how collaboration is transforming lives.

Partners in the NICE Project (AID 012590/06/3) lead by EducAid together conducted sensitisation sessions in schools across the three project areas between September 12 to 27th. The schools involved were Ongata Rongai Primary School, Satellite Primary School and Perijang Primary School in Kajiado North, Dagoretti and Kibra Sub-Counties respectively. Teachers and parents participated in interactive forums discussing challenges faced by children with disabilities, street-connected children, refugees, and those with socialization difficulties.

The activity represented a significant step towards promoting inclusive education beyond the direct target schools, thereby reinforcing community awareness and encouraging broader engagement in inclusive practices.

From 1st to 3rd September, the NICE Project held a learning workshop to reflect on our journey and map the way forward. With guidance from Elena Zaccherini, Amani’s Child Protection Expert, we conducted a retrospective review of Component 1 of the project assessing where we are, why and how we can continue ensuring effective and equitable results for children’s rights and family well-being.

Under the theme “𝐀 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬,” the workshop brought together Amani For Africa and Koinonia Community staff in interactive sessions. Together, we created a “𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞” highlighting key enablers ,obstacles and finalized an action framework with clear steps to guide our progress.
