Last week, GAIN Kenya and Nakuru County Government - Official, through the CASCADE Project, convened a media policy dialogue to deepen engagement on food systems and nutrition policy.

The forum brought together county leaders and media practitioners to assess policy progress and address critical issues including food safety, post-harvest losses, and sustainable nutrition financing.

A clear message emerged: when nutrition policy is well understood and effectively communicated, it can influence public action, strengthen accountability, and accelerate better nutrition outcomes for communities.

Sustaining this momentum will require continued collaboration across all sectors to keep nutrition high on the development agenda and translate policy commitments into real impact.

GAIN Kenya participated in the 1st International Investment Conference and Trade Fair on Indigenous Knowledge Intellectual Assets, convened by the National Museums of Kenya under the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services.

Held under the theme 'Unlocking Investment Opportunities in Kenya’s Indigenous Wealth a new growth area of the economy', the conference spotlighted the critical role of indigenous knowledge in shaping Kenya’s economic, nutrition, and food systems future.

We were pleased to contribute to this important platform implemented through the Natural Products Industry Program, which advances Kenya’s Vision 2030 agenda on heritage based enterprises.

Our Country Director, Ruth Okowa, was a panellist in the session on leveraging traditional foods and local cuisine as pathways for nutrition security, food sovereignty and economic growth. She shared the platform with key stakeholders working to unlock the value of indigenous food systems.

The discussions reinforced the importance of investing in traditional foods not only as a pathway to improved nutrition, but also as a driver of resilient food systems and inclusive economic growth.

We aim to unlock the full potential of indigenous food systems by supporting value chain development, catalysing investment, and advancing policies that enable the production and consumption of nutritious traditional foods.

We were pleased to support the Nakuru County Government - Official in convening a multi-stakeholder forum aimed at advancing nutrition and building more resilient food systems.

The engagement brought together partners from government, private sector, development agencies, and communities to reflect on progress since June 2025 and explore ongoing initiatives under Vegetables for All, Resilient Markets, and CASCADE.

It was encouraging to see strong collaboration and rich discussions focused on scaling impactful, inclusive, and sustainable solutions. The insights shared will go a long way in shaping practical actions to improve nutrition outcomes for all.

Over the past two weeks, our Vegetables for All project has been on the ground in Kiambu, Kilifi County Government and MACHAKOS COUNTY GOVERNMENT, training our amazing Mama Mboga and Last Mile Vendors (LMVs).

The trainings focused on:
✅ Food safety and hygiene
✅ Nutrition
✅ Record keeping and basic business skills

From Karai Ward in Kiambu to Mathatani and Masii in Machakos, vendors are gaining the skills they need to handle vegetables safely, reduce losses and grow their businesses.

We also distributed branding materials to help boost their visibility and build customer trust.

Together, we are working towards safer food, stronger businesses and increased consumption of healthy vegetables in our communities 🥬

We were pleased to join Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and partners at a vendor co-creation workshop in Mukuru, Nairobi, focused on strengthening the sale and consumption of fruits and vegetables.

For us, this was an important space. The discussions closely reflected the work we are already advancing through the Vegetables for All project under the FoodFiti brand.

What stood out clearly is that many of the challenges shared by mama mbogas are the same ones we are actively working to address, including limited capital, price fluctuations, low and unpredictable demand, spoilage, inadequate storage, and weak market infrastructure. It was also encouraging to see strong alignment with areas where our programme continues to expand.

The workshop also created valuable new connections, including with potential suppliers practicing regenerative agriculture, an opportunity to strengthen supply linkages for mama mbogas. A key highlight was the discussion on access to finance, with an important insight from the Ministry of Social Services that group formation can help unlock funding opportunities for vendors.

This is why partnership matters.
For GAIN, this was more than a workshop. It was a powerful reminder that when evidence, partnership, and implementation come together, we can co-create solutions with mama mbogas that strengthen livelihoods and increase access to healthier diets.

On 30 March, we marked the International Day of Zero Waste, a reminder of the untapped potential in reducing food loss and waste.

But beyond the global conversation, change is already happening locally. In Nyandarua County Government, Kenya, a Food Loss and Waste Reduction Action Plan is helping cut losses while creating real economic opportunities for communities.

Even better, these inspiring examples are now easier to explore. The Food and Land Use Coalition has launched the Stories of Transformation Hub, showcasing practical, on-the-ground solutions that are driving food systems change.

It’s not just about ideas, it’s about what’s working.

Early this month, County Government of Kisumu took an important step toward strengthening accountability and impact in Kenya’s food systems.

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition Kenya, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and the County, with funding support from the Irish Embassy in Kenya, officially launched the County-Led Food Systems Transformation through Advancing Financial Tracking & Capacity Enhancement for Scalable Investments (COFFCI) Project.

The project aims to strengthen county-level financial tracking systems, build technical capacity for investment planning, and improve institutional coordination, ensuring that food systems investments translate into measurable improvements in food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and climate resilience.

Building on earlier work with the FAO Kenya, this initiative responds to key gaps in financial tracking, coordination, and technical capacity across counties.

Together, we are advancing financial tracking and institutional capacity at the county level to unlock sustainable and transformative food systems financing.

Yesterday we marked WomensDay, a moment to celebrate women’s contributions and reflect on the changes still needed to achieve true equity.

Across Kenya, women are the backbone of our food system. They grow food, sell it in markets, prepare meals at home, and influence what families eat every day. Yet many of these same women face undernutrition, unstable incomes, unsafe work environments, and limited access to decision-making spaces.

In a new Op-Ed, Ruth Okowa, Country Director of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition Kenya, explains why investing in women’s nutrition is not just a social issue, it is an economic imperative.

Through initiatives like CASCADE (Catalysing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience) and Vegetables for All, GAIN Kenya is supporting women food vendors and strengthening policies that link nutrition, livelihoods, and healthier food environments.

When women are nourished, empowered, and heard, from market stalls to policy tables, families thrive and Kenya’s economy grows stronger.

The impact of investing in women’s nutrition extends far beyond today—it shapes the future.

As Caroline Muteti, Project Officer – Vegetables for All at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Kenya, highlights: when women are well-nourished, pregnancies are healthier and children develop stronger cognitive abilities.

Supporting women’s nutrition today strengthens families, communities, and the economic future of nations.

This , let’s continue investing in women and girls for healthier generations.

“Women must have a seat at the table in boardrooms and policy meetings. When women lead, they ensure food safety and demand better standards for their communities. They are the architects of development.” – Ruth Okowa, Country Director, GAIN Kenya.

This , we celebrate women leaders who are shaping stronger, healthier food systems and advocating for better nutrition for all.

Investing in women’s leadership means investing in safer food, healthier families, and more resilient communities.
