Sali Oyugi, the Founder of LEKO ARTS INITIATIVE resolved to establish this organization after realizing that there is a large number of children and youth living in the poorest neighborhoods of the city, who were very talented and creative, had brilliant minds but had nowhere to go and develop their skills. Most if not all quality arts training centers are either in affluent neighborhoods or too f
ar for these inner-city children and youth to get to. Lacking a place to express and develop themselves has led to these children engaging in self-destructive and sometimes violent behavior, which has severely affected the safety of the communities that these children grow up in. It is therefore very apparent that there is an urgent need to have quality arts, self-development and mentorship programs, such as the one Leko Arts Initiative is providing. Children and youth who would otherwise have not had a chance to see their dreams come true through dedicated and heartfelt nurturing can find hope at the Leko Arts Initiative centers. Sali Oyugi has been a part of the East African cultural music scene for many years therefore the programme naturally has cultural music as a focus. Apart from music, the children get training in African dance and acrobatics. MISSION
To establish vibrant arts centers that will provide an oasis as well as a safe haven for children and youth of the poorest neighborhoods, where they can feel safe, motivated and empowered to dream. VISION
To see vulnerable children and youth from the poorest neighborhoods thrive and develop into responsible citizens through receiving hands-on, professional instruction in visual, performing and media arts.
