Join us to our Virtual Event on International Day for the Girl Child by Elevate Community Network. https://meet.google.com/mbm-iskr-dko
In the session, Ruth Akoth of Forgotten Voices Kenya will delve into the devastating effects of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), highlighting how this issue continues to impede the empowerment of Kenyan girls. Despite efforts to raise awareness, survivors' voices remain unheard, especially in rural and marginalized communities. GBV ( FGM, Forced Child Marriages) not only inflicts physical and emotional trauma but also perpetuates gender inequalities, leaving girls without access to safe spaces, limiting their freedom, and discouraging them from pursuing their goals. Addressing GBV is crucial to dismantling the power dynamics that keep girls from reaching their full potential.
Daniel Ruto of Safina Empowerment will bring attention to the barriers Kenyan girls face in accessing quality education in STEM. Despite global campaigns to promote education for all, many girls remain excluded due to societal norms, economic hardships, and inadequate infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. The session will explore how education can empower girls to break cycles of poverty and marginalization, yet, without policy reform and investment, they are left behind. Safina Empowerment will emphasize the importance of creating gender-sensitive learning environments that encourage girls to thrive academically and socially.
Deborah Monari , The founder of the Fosterhance Advocacy Network will speak on the intersection of good health and well-being with gender equality. Girls in Kenya face significant health challenges, including limited access to sexual and reproductive health services, poor maternal care, and a lack of mental health support. These health disparities, coupled with gender bias, hinder their development and participation in society. This discussion will highlight the need for policies and programs that promote physical and mental well-being, ensuring girls have the necessary resources to lead healthy, productive lives.
Josephine Mwende Kamene of AbleRise Africa Society will focus on diversity and inclusion for girls with special needs and disabilities, often left out of mainstream empowerment initiatives. These girls face compounded challenges due to both gender bias and disability discrimination, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and social opportunities. The discussion will center on creating inclusive policies and community support systems that not only accommodate but empower girls with disabilities, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to society.
Harriet Afandi will be speaking of the role of our Society is ensuring that Boys and men are incorporated into Women and Girls Empowerment and they are aware of the still existing Gender Stereotypes towards safeguarding girls' Rights.
