The Young Women’s Leadership Institute is feminist organisation . We are a driving force that motivates and sets precedence to anchor transformative leadership in young women. We lead in creating spaces, through unconventional feminist platforms, to embrace and collaborate with embryonic groups. YWLI is also a centre of knowledge regarding the rights of young women in Africa and the diaspora.

Today, we unveiled a community mural, a powerful symbol of our collective commitment to ending violence against women and girls in all their diversities, including femicide. The mural serves as a lasting reminder that everyone deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect, and that creating safe communities is our collective responsibility.

We are honored to partner with Dada Yangu in amplifying feminist voices, strengthening community advocacy, and advancing grassroots action to end violence against women and girls. We were joined by women, young women, men, youth, community elders, Nyumba Kumi leaders, the boda boda riders’ community, Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) chief and assistant chiefs, representatives from the State Department of Gender, and other community stakeholders. Their participation reflects the power of collective action and the critical role every stakeholder plays in creating lasting change.

Community-led movements are essential to preventing violence, strengthening protection and referral systems, and ensuring that survivors have access to support. Together, we are building communities where women and girls can live, lead, and thrive free from violence.

We celebrate Dada Yangu for their unwavering leadership and commitment to advancing women’s rights in Kilifi. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to HBS for investing in grassroots feminist organizing and movement building. Through this partnership, we are strengthening community-led advocacy, protection mechanisms, and sustainable support systems that will benefit current and future generations. The media plays a vital role in shaping public conversations, challenging harmful norms, and driving collective action. In the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, responsible journalism helps amplify survivors’ voices, foster accountability, and inspire communities to stand against violence.

Today, YWLI, with support from HBS and in partnership with Dadas Rising, held a session for adolescent girls that included storytelling in Kinango. Through guided reflection, creative writing, and letter-writing exercises, the girls were encouraged to share their lived experiences, dreams, challenges, and hopes in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.
Stories are more than memories, they are tools for advocacy, healing, and change. By creating spaces where girls can speak from the heart, we amplify their voices, strengthen their confidence, and help shape a future where their rights, wellbeing, and aspirations are respected and realized.

We stand in solidarity with the women and girls of Sudan, who continue to face unimaginable hardship as conflict robs them of their safety and security. In El Obeid, even collecting water has become a life-threatening act, with the risk of drone attacks by day and sexual violence by night. People don't always understand this, but every time women read about violence against another woman, it leaves a mark. It isn't just another headline scrolling across our screens; it feels deeply personal because we know that woman could have been any one of us: a sister, a friend, a daughter, a mother, a colleague, or ourselves. Every report adds another layer of fear, grief, anger, and trauma, reminding us how easily our own lives could be changed in an instant. We start questioning the routes we take, the places we go, the time we leave the house, and the precautions we have to take just to feel safe. These stories don't just inform us; they shape how we move through the world. So when women say they're emotionally affected by these headlines, it's not because we're "too sensitive." It's because we don't have the privilege of seeing these stories as something that happens to someone else. We see ourselves in every victim, and we carry that weight long after everyone else has moved on. Until women no longer have to read these stories and wonder, "Could that have been me?"
