Why don’t women report r**e? Because reporting can mean reliving the most traumatic experience of their lives to strangers, investigators, lawyers, and sometimes a courtroom. Many fear being asked what they were drinking, wearing, where they went, whether they flirted, or why they didn’t leave sooner. Too often, the focus shifts from “What happened to you?” to “What did you do?” Silence is not consent, delayed reporting is not lying, and the absence of witnesses does not make an assault less real. Believe survivors.

Harmful myths surrounding Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide can silence survivors, excuse perpetrators, and normalise violence in our communities. From believing that abuse only happens in certain families to thinking survivors can simply leave, or that jealousy is a sign of love, these misconceptions must be challenged. By challenging these misconceptions, we can create safer communities, support survivors without judgment, reject victim-blaming, and hold perpetrators accountable.
