Our new PROMPTS voice AI feature is helping us reach more underserved mothers in Kenya, including women with low literacy levels and mothers who are visually impaired.

Mothers like Sarah can ask questions and receive feedback in under 30 seconds.
The early results from our pilot have been encouraging:

- 9 in 10 mothers say they would use the platform again

- 2,000 mothers in Kenya reached so far

Next, we are looking to expand dialect and language support so even more mothers can access timely, trusted nutrition information in a way that works for them.

We’re proud to see insights from our work in Kenya featured in MSD for Mothers new report, Safer Births Start with Community.
Through the Kenya Quality Ecosystem project, implemented with local governments in Makueni, Mombasa, and Kisii counties, we are helping strengthen health systems to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
So far, the initiative has trained 12,000 healthcare workers and reached 90,000 women. This recognition reflects what’s possible when county governments and partners work together to make safe childbirth more accessible for women and families.

Every year, Department of Health - Nairobi County holds the Health Systems Delivery Awards to recognize excellence in healthcare delivery across the county. To support our local government partners in advancing better maternal and newborn outcomes, we launched the Mothers’ Voice Awards — an initiative that centers the experiences and feedback of mothers receiving care.
In 2025, we gathered and reviewed client feedback on quality of care from facilities implementing our MENTORS and PROMPTS programs. We are proud to celebrate Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital as the Best Overall Winner of the 2025 Mothers’ Voice Awards.
This recognition was inspired by the voice of one mother, who credited her successful delivery to the dedication of the health workers who cared for her, as well as the guidance she received during antenatal care on nutrition, safety, and pregnancy care. Congratulations to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and to every health worker making respectful, safe, and supportive maternal care possible.

The Africa Women Journalism Project - AWJP sponsored the Story Spotlight Health Desk to feature our PROMPTS digital two-way SMS service, recognizing it as part of Kenya’s digital push to improve maternal and newborn health.

The story highlights something important: timely, life-saving information can change how women experience care. For pregnant women and mothers with children under one year in Kakamega County, access to trusted health information by SMS helps them make informed decisions, seek care earlier, and feel more supported throughout their journey.

Last week we facilitated the Kenya Quality System Cross-County Learning Workshop in Mombasa, bringing together teams from Mombasa, Kisii and Makueni to swap what’s working and scale it faster.

Here’s what peer learning looks like in practice:
Mombasa County → OR support: After Makueni’s live demo, Mombasa introduced Proximie for tele-mentorship and real-time surgical support in the operating room.
Kisii County→ Faster referrals: Kisii standardized referral forms modelled on Makueni’s approach.
Makueni County→ Faster action: Makueni now runs weekly virtual MPDSR meetings inspired by Mombasa’s model.

These are repeatable changes and system-level gains that allow more mothers and babies to experience reliable, respectful care.

The Star recently highlighted how county-led health systems strengthening is contributing to national maternal and newborn goals.

In Kisii County, facility based maternal mortality deaths have declined by 34.6%, according to Kenya Quality Ecosystem data. That shift didn’t happen by chance, it followed deliberate health system decisions informed by better data, stronger mentorship, and tighter accountability loops.
