“Socrates said, “The misuse of language induces evil in the soul.” He wasn’t talking about grammar. To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth. A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.”

Did you know Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmental and human rights activist, had a doctorate in veterinary anatomy?

She became the first woman in East Africa to earn a doctorate, but gradually grew into a celebrated environmental and human rights activist known as the woman of trees.

Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. She mobilised Kenyans to plant more than 30 million trees with the aim of alleviating poverty.

Her movement helped more than 900,000 Kenyan women who benefited from her tree-planting campaign by selling seedlings for reforestation, and inspired the United Nations to launch a campaign that has led to the planting of 11 billion trees worldwide.

📢 The Hope for Change Environmental Initiative: Mukuru FlowGuard Project 📢

Hello, Mukuru Nyayo community! 🌍

We’re thrilled to announce the Mukuru FlowGuard Initiative, a project dedicated to creating a cleaner, safer, and more resilient community. This initiative has three main goals:

1. Enhance Drainage Capacity: We aim to upgrade and expand drainage systems to handle heavy rains better and significantly reduce flood risks. 🌧️🔧

2. Community Participation: This is your project! By engaging the community in designing, implementing, and maintaining these improved drainage systems, we’re fostering a sense of ownership and building sustainable infrastructure that will last for years to come. 🙌🏽🏘️

3. Improve Waste Management: We are committed to implementing waste management practices that prevent drainage blockages and reduce health risks. Clean drains lead to a healthier Mukuru! 🗑️🚯

🎉 Join us this Friday, November 8th, 2024, for a Community Cleanup at the Mariguini: Fuata Nyayo Bridge connection drainage. We’ll kick off at 9 AM, and your participation will make a huge difference!

Let’s come together to build a safer and cleaner community. Bring your friends and family—let’s make this a day of positive change! 🌱✨

Together, we can guard Mukuru against floods and waste. See you there! 💪
