KNCHR was tasked with doing two things simultaneously: compiling a verified list of victims of gross human rights violations linked to the 2017, 2024, and 2025 demonstrations, and developing a Reparations Guidelines framework to govern how and how much eligible individuals would be compensated. It was a formidable undertaking, made harder by resource constraints that the Commission has since flagged publicly.

Twenty-five years ago, Dickson Masindano arrived in Nairobi with a mandate and a modest ambition — to plant a seed. What has grown since is a towering institution. Today, Buckner Kenya stands as one of the continent's more quietly formidable NGOs, a two-time winner of the NGO Awards' Best in Education category, and a case study in what principled leadership can accomplish across a quarter century.

Masindano, who previously worked at Buckner International in the United States, was sent back to Kenya in 2001 to establish a local office. He accepted the assignment. What followed was a masterclass not merely in organizational management, but in the art of leading by example — an art he still considers the bedrock of everything Buckner Kenya has become.

"The juniors are always watching what their leaders do," he says, leaning back in his office during a reflective sit-down to mark the organisation's silver jubilee. "It is completely out of place to demand habits from your team that you yourself don't embody."

Along the way, we realised that depending entirely on donor funds would leave us dangerously exposed in the long run. We made a deliberate decision to develop income-generating business ventures to supplement our revenue. Today, local resource mobilisation through diversification accounts for 45% of our total income, with donors covering the remaining 55%.~ Dickson Natembeya Masindano | Kenya founding ED

Nairobi, Kenya – The past two weeks have seen a flurry of activity across Kenya's Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) sector, marked by bold citizen-led initiatives, critical regulatory updates, and heightened calls for accountability from civil society groups. From ambitious cross-country treks for social good to legal challenges against government expenditure, NGOs and public benefit organizations are actively shaping the national discourse.

The second week of February 2026 has been defined by a sharp escalation in the watchdog role of Kenya's civil society. As grassroots movements launch physical infrastructure for the poor, prominent lobby groups are locked in a high-stakes legal and constitutional battle over the management of public funds.

NGO leaders don't have a choice. They have to start reinventing the way they handle human resources. Funding is steep, aid is dying and solutions have to be invented.

Ann Kobia the HR expert who works at The Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) has some important advice for leaders. Jobseekers who want to get into the NGO sector because they believe that there's money also have to know how to position themselves and make noise about what they do. In essence package their skill in a way that's unique and creative enough to show that you offer unique value.

It may be painful for NGO leaders to let go of talented people. But Ann says when you let go of talented people you get other equally talented staff if not even better.

Lastly, now hiring is project-based. It's not about getting many people and gloating that you have more than 700 staff members working for you. It's getting more tricky out here. Leaders have to be smart.

deputy executive director believes they can influence the election. We sat down with him and this is what he had to say.
"The elections are looming and we know the campaign season will kick off. Our programming will align with that. We believe elections are a key pillar of the democratic process. Because we're aware the narrative by politicians will dominate, we're focusing on educating the masses on the core issues that will determine voters' decisions come 2027."
