It was once again a Tuesday of serving persons with Albinism on 18th August 2026

They had travelled all the way from Muranga County to reach Dr Choksey Albinism Foundation in Nairobi
Most of them were in their fifties and sixties

One of them Jane Wanjiku even brought a pullover hand knitted by her as a gift !!!

It was an honor and privilege for Dr Choksey Albinism Foundation to welcome Antoine Gliksohn executive director of Global Albinism Alliance on 30th June 2026 at Doctors Plaza Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi Kenya 🇰🇪

Through their stories Linda Nyagoha, Evanson Kangethe, Yvonne Odipo, Caroline Mwangi and others Mr Gliksohn was introduced to challenges of living with Albinism in Kenya 🇰🇪 and the support they all got in their education from the foundation
Christine Amimo, Fridah Marauni and other mothers with Children with Albinism told their own stories of stigma, rejection, neglect and breaking up of their matrimonial homes 🏠 on birth of their children with albinism

Dr Choksey introduced him to her own journey of reaching out to persons with Albinism since 2007 when she realized that most of the children with Albinism were thrust into blind schools ( many were taught in Braille ) without assessing their refraction and improvement with prescription glasses
Though Visually impaired her own observations are that with prescription photochromatic glasses majority of them do not come in the bracket of Legal blindness

Since she believes education is the greatest gift one can give children she shared the phenomenal success stories of the school sponsorship program of the foundation
All the young adults and children who attended were beneficiaries of the foundation

Dr Choksey also highlight a very important aspect of albinism - though the stigma and dangers of exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sunlight in tropical countries is same for all persons with albinism the degree of Visual Impairment and refractive errors are totally different in all the persons
Some have Myopia ( short sightedness) some have Hypermetropia ( Long sightedness) and some have high degree of Astigmatism ( where images appear unfocused)

No two persons with albinism have the same prescription of glasses

An Ophthalmologist or a competent Optometrist thus plays a major role in the lives of all persons with albinism
Photophobia is also a very disturbing symptom in albinism so added photochromatic element to the glasses makes a tremendous difference
( The foundation provides all persons with albinism free prescription photochromatic glasses)

She also believes in sharing Love 💕 and compassion and Dr Choksey Albinism Foundation functions like a big family where every person with albinism has a feeling of belonging
They all call her Mama and she is happiest practicing- nonbiological parenting on them

It was a proud moment for the foundation when Mr Antoine Gliksohn pinned the badge of membership of Global Albinism Alliance on Dr Prabha Choksey

International Albinism Awareness Day 2026 at Thika School for the Visually Impaired was celebrated together with the 80th Anniversary of the School on 13th June 2026

It was an honor for Dr Choksey Albinism Foundation to participate in the celebrations with National Council for Persons with Disabilities- NCPWD

The Chief guest was
Dr Julius Ogamba CS Ministry of Education
There were many performances but what took Dr Prabha Choksey’s heart away was a girl wearing a Sari to honor her during the Catwalk done by Secondary School Students!
Caxton Osozie was the Master of Ceremonies and DJ was James Smallet a person with albinism who even played a Hindi song during the catwalk

On this International Albinism Awareness Day 2026 let us pledge to walk together with children with albinism with love, compassion, understanding and respect 🙌🏻
