June 25th marks one year since Kenyans voiced their concerns through widespread protests at the 2024 Finance Bill.
We remember those who have lost their lives and reaffirm every Kenyan’s right to peaceful assembly and to express themselves.

e-CATS kicked off a three-day basic workshop in Bisil, County, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It's Day 2 of the non-violent workshop, and the team is diving into some important issues. Discussions on how long-standing cultural traditions shape community dynamics and may be holding back progress in gender equality and education are going on.

Effective communication at all levels—between clans, between families, and between community members and leadership was raised as a concern in the workshop, that had a mixed group of participants (youth & adults). Therefore, as reported by the participants, in adequate development activities, misinformation and misunderstanding are the consequences of the long standing issues.

Anger is on the rise, often stemming from perpetual conflicts that are deep rooted and related to gender based violence because of the cultural aspect. In this neck of woods, a man rules supreme and girls are not given an opportunity to express themselves This can manifest in conflicts or resistance to change.

This month, our grant partners submit midyear progress reports and it is really exciting to learn about all the wonderful work! SIA grant partner e-CATS (Empowering Communities as Actors For Transforming Society) shared a story form a recent training involving a blind walk/trust exercise.
"By participating in the blind walk, which is also referred to as the trust exercise, participants were encouraged to create a sense of inner calm and to foster peaceful community ties. Participants could empathize with the vulnerable in violent situations by simulating blindness or visual impairment and appreciated the need to be patient and persistent in trying to build bridges for peaceful coexistence.
Through participation in this experiential learning, participants were encouraged to cultivate patience, tolerance, and trust, all of which are key attributes for efficiently establishing peace.
The activity brought to light the difficulties associated with leading and directing others, highlighting the significance of continuing to exert effort and providing support to one another. In the end, the blind walk brought to light the significant role that trust plays in the development of constructive interpersonal relationships, efficient communication, and cooperative problem-solving."
